...with another Wed niter. Winds 18 to 20 NW, the C boat set a windward first leg a near beat 2nd leg and a broad reach 3rd twice around. We got off to a great start and lead all boats to the first mark. Got caught by a J120 at the second mark but sat on his leeward hip all the way to the bottom mark. By this point the bulk of the fleet was close to a mile behind us. On the second go round the J120 started to pull away but we played the wind gusts and hung in. The J finished 90 seconds ahead of us over the approx 5 mile course. The J phrf's at 51 and owed us about 39 seconds a mile or about 195 seconds. She took line honors but we wound up correcting out in 1st place..........damn isn't racing FUN ;D

Not to rain on your parade, but

You mention that the J-120 had a 51 rating. By chance were you racing in a non-spinnaker class? The J-120 is rated for a rather large A-chute on a sprit. If they racing at that rating in a non-spinnaker class they are definitely severely rating challenged. At the wind speeds you stated, a j-120 would definitely be gone with their A-chute. At 20 knots true their boat speed with the A-sail should be well over 10-12knots. I'm pretty sure the 35.5 can't hang with that kind of speed. Something is not quite right here with your story.

Nope!

racer rick, yes we were racing spin. We were racing on a Soverel 33 (phrf rating 90) thereby the rating difference of 39 seconds. My 35.5 rates locally at 138. Having beaten the J at the start and holding them off for as long as we did is an accomplishment on its own. Correcting out on top is just icing. Last nite(6/13) we raced my 35.5 in 18 to 20 against an even faster Farr40 rating 3. We corrected out ahead of her also.
