just got a Mac/venture 222, have some questions

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to sailing and just got a Mac 222 this past weekend for $1k. right now it's dirty and ugly(mostly on the inside), I've been doing some clean up in the morning before going to work and plan to do more work this weekend.

I put up a lot of detail pic's here,http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u190/jou128/Mac 222/. hope you guys can give me some eval, most importantly on the hull, keel, riggings, etc. If you see any potential problems, pls let me know.

The interior paint is peeling off, what should I do about this? what kind of paint should i use? I think the keel still got plenty of life on it, what do you think?

The boat seller had to move out of state in an emergency and sold it at below-average price to me.

the boat is sitting at my local dry storage place for the time being and I took the sail/boom/6 hp tohatsu home for safety reasons.

thanks.

Faris

It looks like you paid about what it is worth. Doesn't look like you got a bargain, but I don't think you got taken either. It seems to be relatively complete and mostly just cosmetically challenged. Take a look at what I wrote recently to another guy in a similar ... boat: http://forums.macgregor.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=131791&#post831442

I would do just that. It won't cost you anything but several hours of elbow grease, and it's really not a hard job. It'll make you feel 300% better and you'll know exactly what you're dealing with. The thing that is different about what you are dealing with is that some prior owner has painted the ceiling with some paint that was either the wrong paint or which was not properly applied. It's going to have to be stripped (no point in Mold Armoring that). What you replace it with is not extremely important - a good exterior latex paint is fine, just make sure to use a good primer.

As with all of these boats, my first concern would be that keel. It was hard to tell if it had any hidden ugliness, but what was visible looked serviceable. Still, you should definitely remove it and refinish it. That's going to be the worst job that I can see (aside from whatever you want to do with the interior).

I could see some possible structural damage to your sliding hatch cover, but that can be easily repaired. The hull appears in good shape, though maybe touching up the dings on the very bottom of the hull wouldn't hurt.

Serviceable? That keel looks in beautiful shape on that side, compared to what I have seen! Haha, but yes, Faris is right---definitely take a good look at that keel. A few minor cracks are no big deal: fill the cracks with epoxy, finish it with a good barrier coat, and go sailing. If there are large cracks that we're not seeing...well...that's not good. My V222 is laid up for keel repairs right now, because a few cracks turned into total delamination. I have done temporary repairs over the last few years, but now it's time to drop the keel and do it right before the keel drops out of the boat on its own. Keep water away from the steel core....rust growing on the pivot hole is your keel's worst nightmare.

Other than that, yeah, the boat looks pretty good. I agree with Faris on the price, though; unless the sails and outboard are new. That interior needs a lot of work. What year is it?

can you be more specific on how to keep water away from steel core?
year is 1974.
the other side of the keel is in the same condition as the side shown in the pic.

1974? I thought your side windows looked slightly different. With some cleaning, that is going to be a nice looking boat!

To keep the steel core protected, you just need to make sure that there are no open cracks in the fiberglass. Otherwise, over time, the cracks will allow water to leak into the steel core. It will then rust, expanding and causing more cracks. Sometimes the fiberglass falls off of the keel (as was my case), but more often it just swells, cracks, and wedges tight in the keel trunk.

But your keel is in far, far, far better shape than that right now, according to the pictures. If any cracks exist, and you seal them now with epoxy (do not use household caulk, glue, or other such items...they will not last), then you will get many years of trouble-free use out of it.

If you're able, the ideal thing to do is to very carefully drop just the head (top, pivoting end) of the keel out of the bottom of the boat to examine the pivot and lock bolt holes. If they look good, just put the keel back. If not, you can repair them before something undesirable happens. Looking at your pictures, though, if that is in fact the factory fiberglass finish on the keel, then I would say that your keel is in wonderful shape. I wish mine still looked anything like that....I'm lucky to have the core left in it.
