This July I'm going to sail a Formosa 41 from Honolulu to Monterey Ca. Her owner doesn’t have the time or motivation to get her there. The vessel has been sitting dockside for about 2 years. Her previous owner had been prepping her for world cruising, but had some medical problems and had to giver her up. She comes; Re-rigged (standing rigging) in 99, new bilge system both manual and automatic, rented 6 per open ocean life raft, professionally inspected working radar, 3 GPS systems (2 are garmin hand held back ups) 3 VHF radios (1 hand held). Lots of serviceable sails to include a storm jib and a Trysail. My major concerns are no SSB or gale rider/sea anchor. As for a float plan, we plan to head north till we get past the Pacific high and head west until I see hard stuff and head right until I see the golden gate bridge. I’m planning on a 25 to 30 day passage Any Tips? Dan

I am in no way even a novice at open water navagation (well I do always get it back to the trailer). That known, if you left Honolulu went north, then west, would not the "hard stuff" be Japan? Would it not be a Golden Pagoda? Maybe I missed something but it sounds like great fun and I want to go, wherever you end up. Congrats on the plan. I wish you safe passage. Brian

My brother did that trip and ended up motoring more than expected so bring lots of fuel (plus filters, tools and spares). If the boat has been sitting two years I'd be concerned about fuel quality. I suspect you'd get a better response if you posted this on the Cruising World BB since "most" of the production boats on this site don't belong out there. Barry

Made the trip a few years ago too.
Dan: I made the trip a few years ago from Kaneohe Bay to San Deigo aboard a Santa Cruz 52. Our trip took 14 days. For the entire trip we only had one day of high winds 25-30 kts and 18-20ft seas. Most of the rest of the trip was very un-eventful. This boat is very fast but you may be over estimating your time. I guess it is better to figure more time than less. We headed out of Kaneohe bay and headed NE towards Portland, OR for about 6 days. We went north approx. to Montery before we turned to the SE. I think our total mileage was about 2800 miles. We also had 5 sailors aboard. The skipper did not stand watch so we had 2 people on each watch. The night watches were 3 hrs each and the day watches were 4 hrs each. The temperatures for the first few days was quite warm, but cooled as we headed north and really cooled as we headed east. Much of the food that we took aboard was partitally prepared to make meal prep much easier. We also had a freezer so much of the food could be frozen. Our vessel had a water maker aboard and we also had about 120 gal. of storage. We had a sea shower off the stern (fresh water rinse) about every other day while the water was warm then we got to use the on board shower as the weather cooled. We also had about 200 gal of fuel aboard and ended up motoring for a fair amount of time. We did not experience any breakdowns except for a minor problem with our steering system which was repaired with a couple of wire ties. I would personally like to have an alternator and water pump along with a spare impeller and belts at a minimum. You will also want some filters, spare fuel hose, duct tape and any thing you can think of. I would hope you also have a spare set of sails if possible too (you never know). One thing that was amazing to me is the amount of trash floating around out there. We saw everything from crab traps with foam block floating, dish drainers... you name it and if it floats we saw it. Obviously you cannot see much of the floating items during the night watches but during the day was a different story. I would suggest you take this boat out in some heavy weather before you leave for your trip. You want to be sure to get everthing that you have control over shaken down before you start your venture. We did not see any other boats or ships during the entire voyage with the exception of a day or two on each end of the trip. There is not a lot of help out there. You may be returning along with some of the racers so just be prepared and be careful.

I'm interested in increasing my sailing abilities and have no off shore experiance, but I've done quite a bit of SF Bay stuff. I do have concerns about your going north, then WEST. I'd recommend you consider north then EAST, otherwise you'll need a passport. Let me know if you're open for crew positions and what you'd consider.
