Just bought H-36

Hi.... Just bought a Hunter 36 1981 model...Seems like a good boat...Anyhing we should be on the look-out for on this model, chain plates,keel paint, wiring, or any problem spots??? Any information wouldbe appreciated...RegardsGaryN7WXPS have already installed the ham radio onboard..

There are a lot more reviews of the h37c, and the boats ar of the same construction, so the issues (except for the staysail) will be the same.DavidLady Lillie

The 36

is quite different from the 37c. The designs are quite different with the 37c having considerably more displacement. The 36 has a deck stepped mast whereas the 37c is keel stepped. One of the biggest potential problems with the 36 is the compression post.

We're starting our fourth season with 82 H36. We bought it at Shilsho in Seattle from the original owner. Very pleased with it so far. Can't think of anything unique to the H36 to look out for. Am in process of replacing the water heater. It was a bear to get the old one out. Had to cut it in half with a hack saw. Is your H36 equipped with a starboard qtr berth behind the nav station? Not sure when they started that arrangement. On ours, the seat of the nav station is actually the front of the qtr berth. Agree with earlier post that the H36 and H37c are quite different. Would like to hear how your H36 works out.Mikes/v Charisma

I have owned my 1980 36 since 1992. Some things you may want to check:1. The access cover that the rudder post goes through in the aft lazarette. This is made of plywood and over time it will rot. I replaced mine last year with a Starboard polymer board. 2. I am rebuilding my compression post and mast step area. Water seeps in through the mast wires and it will rot the bottom of the post and the balsa core around the mast step. The raised area under the deck mast step is made of 1/2 inch balsa topped with a 1/4 inch aluminium plate. I cut the raised area off and found the balsa was black sludge. You can tell if you have this problem if you are getting cracks around that mast base.3. My rudder post broke 2 years ago. It looked like there was a crack that existed before total failure. It broke right at the point where the post enters the top of the rudder.All other repairs have been normal for a boat of this age.
