So I borrowed my sister in law's capri last year. This year it didn't work out. Turns out I found a capri 22 on a trailer in pretty good condition. I will need some help and guidance. One of the few flaws the boat has is a little damage to the keel. I will need to grind down a repair that was made to the keel and reglass the area and seal it properly. My first question is what material is best for the repair at the base of where I am grinding. I believe the keel is cast iron? So if I grind deep, should I marine Tex the deepest area of grinding, and then use unidirectional glass, built up and then gel the flush faired surface before applying bottom paint?. It looks like it took a pretty good hit. The repair has popped a little and I intend to fix it with a more permanent result. Boat is basically clean, and damage free other than the keel it comes with a large sail inventory, whisker pole, spinnaker pole, cockpit cushions, race setup with a traveller ( thank God, last one had a dingy block in cockpit sole) cabin top winches and tracks, canvas covers for tiller and boom. Nice Loadrite trailer I will be sailing it on the Tom's River and Barnegat Bay, so hitting rocks etc is not likely. What brand of solar masthead light do you guys recommend? Anyone use wind instruments on this boat or is a Windex basically plenty for such a small boat. I noticed the Sampson system is reasonably priced. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

The keel material is lead. Mine had a chunk taken out of the leading edge by the wings when I got it. A few years later I made the repair with thickened West Systems Epoxy. I did grind down to the bare metal and made some little grooves for the epoxy to adhere better.

Although I can't help you with the keel, I too just purchased a 1988 Capri.
I'm sailing on Lake Erie, in some pretty strong winds. Not sure if my boat was particularly weak but I have had to do some emergency repairs.
You may want to inspect the rudder mounting, gooseneck and all the rigging. Mine had pressed metal clevises as opposed to the cast ones. Maybe she was used to light air sailing but I've had a few 20 knot days and she has had a few failures. Hope you have better results.
Love the boat however, and now that she is rigged for stronger winds, lots of fun!

Hey Tom, Where do you keep Knot Scene docked? I think you may have followed my wife and I out of the Buffalo river a few days ago. We went out with a full head sail only to see how well the boat handled in that configuration. We keep Chingaletta Docked at First Buffalo River Marina and are the last boat on the B section. We are just to starboard of the travel lift. Say hey if you pass by.
