I just bought this boat and know nothing about this vintage Hunter. Actually I should say I know nothing about these boats between the base of the mast and the bottom paint. I know about the sails and rigging but nothing about the other systems. I have owned a number of small racing keelboats, but this is my first real cruising boat and first inboard boat. I have bought the boat to spend more time sailing with my wife and 3yo and want to relax on the water for a change.
It has been sitting on the hard for a number of years and got water in it during this time. So it needs a good cleaning to start with, and at least some work on the cabin sole where it is soft. I have a ton of questions and will have many more I'm sure as I go. I haven't even gone through the boat thoroughly so I don't know what all is there. I am wondering if there are some typical issues that are particular to this boat? It would be great to have an idea of what to look for as I am getting started. I really want to start sailing in early spring so I will figure out how picky I am able to be later. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

H36 Ideas

Congratulations and welcome to the Cherubini family!

Your H36 is so similar to my H37C that you could get a lot of project information from the Rainbow Chaser site, scroll way down:
http://www.geocities.com/rainbow_chaser.geo/index.html
and from the H37C knowledgebase here on HOW:
http://hunter.sailboatowners.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=38&Itemid=249 There are 57 projects with photos, several will be relevant.

Also read the Owner's Reviews if you have not already. I suggest the H37C forums because over the years I have seen so many more questions and answers there than for the H36. But many of the Cherubinis had similar issues. The bigger boats were unique because of the keel-stepped mast.

Then as you discover things come back with specific questions. I see from the Owner's Directory, using "36_80-82" for a search, that there are 48 entries. And I know some of them are regulars here.

Cherubini H36

Ed,
Thanks for the quick response. Your 37 looks like it was a big project! I am probably not going that far with this boat, but you of course never know until you get going. Hopefully there are some 36 owners who are active here. I will keep posting as I learn more and have more questions.
Thanks again,
Jerry

H36 and Rainbow Chaser.

Rainbow Chaser is not my site nor my boat Jerry. When I started looking for a cutter back in '98 I ran across Gene Grueunder's(sp?) site. I used it over and over to understand the boats deficiencies and learned a lot. Gene has moved on but his photos and projects remain, I hope for many years to come.

My own major projects include a new Yanmar 3YM30, ten bronze portlights, complete new head system, A/C, refrigeration, autohelm, mast rewire, Nexus instrumentation, new sails, and lots of cosmetic work. Since I do all of my own work that is almost ten years worth of work. But I like being self-sufficient. A recent cruise from Lake Erie to North Carolina proved the value in that.

Not sure why I thought that was your boat. But it sounds as if you have done quite a few upgrades to your boat and will have ideas for me as I get going with this. Thanks again for the help.

Hunter 1980 H36 Kemah - Texas
Jerry,
I too just bought a 1980 H36, closed the deal on 11/17. My compression mast in the bilge was rusted out and you could see daylight through it. My surveyor call it out and the owner dropped the price drastically. I replaced the wooden post(2 pieces of 2x4 post), wrapped around by the mahogony with an Al pipe. I have seen another H36 donw that way. Boat is still in Marathon, FL and willl be trucking it back to Houston.

This forum has loads of information.

Steve,
I didn't have the boat surveyed and have not looked at the compression post. I will be at the boat on Friday and will take a look. It is good to know there is another new owner out there.

Jerry (and Steve),
Congrats on your newely acquired H36's. We love ours.
Send me a message (email..look me up in owner directory) and I'll send you a pdf of the owners manual.
Jerry, the C-post can be reached by lift the rear half of the bilge cover. You will need a small mirror and a flashlight. As Steve indicated, the cpost is 2-2x4s behind the mahogony panel. The steel post only extends from below the deck to the top of the keel. Mayve steve has some photos he would be willing to post???
How does the channel that provides lateral support to the rudder look uder the rear seat behind the wheel? I need to post the repair I did to replace the rusted steel one on my boat.
Ed S. is an exellent resource, as his boat is very similar to ours and he has completed a lot of work on his boat.
Enjoy your boats. :)

Jim,
The channel on my boat is also rusted. How did you replace yours?

Queen of the Fleet

John Cherubini, who designed the Hunters of that era called the 36 the "Queen of the Fleet." Evidently he thought the 36 was the sweet spot of the design.

None of us are really objective on the topic, but I do like the look of the 36. Sail her, then get started on projects.
