Well, we finished the prep for the season and even managed to get the newly revitalized sails installed early on Saturday. So, we decided to set sail for Kelley's Island (about a 12 mile trip from our home port). We had sent the main and head, both, into Sailcare last November after putting the boat on the hard for winter. Due to a problem with the batten pockets, I had requested that three of them be repaired, too. After talking with them, I decided to have the top two partial battens made into full battens. What a difference the two top full battens make!! The sails came back with that "magic" crispness and bright freshness, but the modification of the battens makes a HUGE difference. We set sail in 12 knot windsfrom the East which quickly increased to 20 kts, gusting to 35 out of the North, Northeast. We were headed North, Northwest, so it was not the most comfortable ride. The waves were 2-4, increasing to 4-6 with 8 foot rollers in Lake Erie off the Southshore of Kelley's. We managed to enjoy some spray and even some massive water at times, but our H-27 has never sailed better. On Sunday, the winds were still from the NNE at about 18 kts, gusting to 23. The waves were not as bad, and we had a much less demanding trip back. When we hit Sandusky Bay, the waves were down to about 1-2, and the sailing within the bay was great. It was a nice way to end our first outing of the season. We're looking forward to many more great hours on the water, and want to experiment with the sails in all types of weather.
