jrc radar lcd 1000 mounted outside

hi all! i recently upsized from a san juan 23 to a tanzer 28, the tanzer came with a jrc radar lcd 1000 that was mounted inside next to the chart table. in the owner manual it does say that the radar should be mounted away from spray and rain. However, i value this tool more closer to the helm and i am looking for some solution to mount it acsseible to the wheel steering and still protected from spray and rain. maybee a box with a translucide cover or something.

So, is this a CRT or LCD? Regardless, if it says keep out of the elements, you would be well advised to heed the recommendation. I have seen CRT's mounted under dodgers. Still, that's not handy either. one option may be to look for a LCD head on e-bay compatible with your dome and move it to the cockpit. I did that by replacing a CRT below with a Furuno outside. It is more expensive than you might think. Check out prices for the pods and mounts. It may be better to live with this until you decide to upgrade your electronics with an integrated radar/plotter at the helm. Good luck!

I had one of these for several years

I had that exact same unit for several years. It was mounted at the helm, and never gave any problem. When new it fogged up inside, and it was promptly fixed by JRC under warranty. I was always happy with it, and found their customer service to be very good. I sold the boat a couple years ago, and as far as I know, it is still mounted and working.

Rick it is the lcd, nice and easy, good to know, ill make some kind of pod with a flip over clear cover, should keep most of the rain of of it. I would still like to see the solution that people came up with for mounting them on the binacle, thanks for your reply

I have the 1500 unit which I believe is the same LCD screen and mine is at the helm with a cover on it most times until I need it....and I had the same fog up issue but went into my Ebay spare supply dept. and swapped it out....I should call JRC and have them fix it....great unit

Since your is the LCD, it should not be a problem to mount outside, but I would recommend in a pod, and with a canvas cover. You could even get fancy and make the cover with a isinglass front so you could view the radar if it was raining.
What I did is to mount mine on a swing-away mount so that I could see it from the side if someone else was on the helm or if the boat was on AP and I was not sitting at her helm. Later, I modified the mount and got a pod off e-bay that would fit my unit flush-mounted. BTW, I used it below for a lot of years and you do adjust. It worked fine below on two boats. It's not like you need it every second. The mount and head are on the port side of the steering counsel. There is one picture without the pod and two with.
