I am in the process of installing a JRC 1800 radar/plotter on a pole mount. I am trying to figure out how to wire through the pole and hull without the large end plug. I lookdc ingo the end plug, and with all of the small wires, I do not want to chance getting all back in the right place. The termination on the radar dome looks like it required the entire unit to be taken apart piece by piece and removed from the dome as the wires go into the bottom with no visible terminal block. Has anyone had experience with one of these units or a similar unit. The plug end is 1.5" and would be too big of a hole in the hull, etc. Thanks for any information.

Take it apart.

You almost have to take it apart. So long as you mark all of the connections it should not be a problem. You certainly do not want a 1.5 inch hole in the stern of your boat. Besides, how would you get that plug routed through the boat and up the pole? My manual, page 15, has a very clear diagram of the wiring connections in the scanner unit. If you feel too inexperienced then you should find some help.

Tried cutting & splicing???

I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck cutting the wire and splicing it back together either with solder & tape or a bus bar????? I've got mine cut and am still waiting for an answer from JRC's tech support. George

Give JRC a call.

They must have a customer support line. Find out their recommendation.

Thanks

Thanks for your input. I talked to a local shop and may have them just do the dome wiring. I think it should only be about an hour's work if I have everything set up. This has been a rather inexpensive project so far with a donated radar pole that I have had to refurbush. I just hate to pay for something that I think I could do myself, especially after just rewiring much of the boat.

threading the cable

I installed the JRC 1800 on my 386, on the mast, last year and ran into the same problem. Since the supplied cable was not long enough to get it to the steering station I was faced with a similar dilemma. I bit the bullet and cut the cord, leaving a 3 foot tail, since there was no way to get the end plug down the mast. I used a terminal block and a friend to check that I didn't misplace a wire. The timer on the radar indicates I have used it about 85 hours and the one for the chartplotter, well over 200 hours. It has worked perfectly...........so far.

Harvey, Where did you get the

extra wire you needed to get to your helm. Also, you must have had to make two connections. Did you use terminal blocks for both? The wire has 10 conductors plus some shielding. Do you have any pictures of your termial block installation? Thanks in advance. George

radar timing

Be careful. As I understand it (and I could be wrong) the radar unit is designed with very precise timing of the radio beacon that emanates and the reflection it receives. The length of the connecting wire is figured into those calculations. Thus, the distance indicated on the unit may be wrong if the connecting wire length is modified.

extra cable

Unfortunately I had to purchase an extra cable-I don't remember just how much it was, but it was exorbitant. It must be a proprietary cable set. It did, however, make the installation possible, since I needed all the cable I could get. I purchased the 20 meter extension.

Termination box

I cut the standard cable on my installation to thread through the post. I made sure the break occured in the lazarette and used a waterproof junction box to 'hide' the soldered wires. Did this about 18 months ago and have run up about 70 hours without a problem. Good luck
