I have pondered this myself.. and concluded that it may be determined by which side of the equator you sail on..?? The parts list for my cheapie Jabsco show the opening to be horizontal.. but then there are some joker valves that have three lips !! I had a rum drink while pondering and then put it in with the slot vertical thinking that might aid "turning the corner" in the outlet housing..
Peggy..??? We need some input here.. especially since Arkansas is on the same side of the equator as Louisiana !!
I just rebuit my entire sanitary system from toilet to treatment. I haven't got the foggiest idea which orientation I put my joker valve in. What I do know though is that my toilet flushes much better. I would take a guess that more important than which way you put the joker valve is that you in fact replace the joker valve. The one I replaced (recently acquired boat) had scale on it and the valve opening was tired and would not completely close.
When a manual toilet doesn 't want to empty the bowl while you're pumping it, the joker valve should be the first thing to look at and/or replace. If it cannot seal tightly on the upstroke of the piston, it will not pump out the bowl.
