Has anyone had any experience with Johnson Sailmaster outboards? Are parts still available? I think the engine is mid 1970's vintage. I know you can have a hard time finding old Mercury parts of this vintage. This Johnson is hanging on the transom of a boat I'm looking at purchasing so if parts are hard to find or gone forever it will influence my purchase. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Jay

I have a Johnson SailMaster

Great Engine!!! Longer shaft then you need if you have a retrackable motor mount. I got mine in 1995. I am sure they are still being made!

I have a 9.9hp Sailmaster

Last year when I purchased my 1980 Cat25, it had a 1979, 9.9hp Johnson, Sailmaster (electric start). This boat had been setting at the dock for several years and had been severely neglected. The Sailmaster started right up but was running rough. I had to replace the power pack and the local Johnson dealer was unable to get the parts, telling me the electrical parts were no longer in production but they may come in on a back order.... I found out that NAPPA Auto stores carry a line of Marine parts. I called NAPPA and had the power pack in two days. Once I had the motor running correctly, I discovered that it also had a charging problem. A quick call to NAPPA and they were able to get a rectifier for me also. The Electrical parts have been no problem. Great engine and moves the boat well. Outboardparts.com has a list of parts and I found the part numbers to be very close to the original part number and the NAPPA part number. The Johnson page is at http://www.outboardparts.com/omc/mall/omc.htm

Johnson 9.9

I too have a 1979 Johnson 9.9 longshaft and it is a great running motor. When I bought the boat that the motor came with in 1995, it still had the original spark plugs in it and the thing purred like a kitten. I replaced the water pump and housing, fuel pump, spark plug, and lower unit seals anyway for a little piece of mind and it generally starts on the first pull. I'm very happy with it. As for parts, I checked a few marine shops and the parts seem to be readily available. Marine shops that have been around for a few years(30 or 40) seem to have a lot of the older parts.
