Hello all-

This week I will pull my Johnson Sailmaster 8 off the back of my boat and bring it home for the winter.

I'll change the oil, gear oil, check plugs etc.

Does anyone know of an online resource to find instructions to do this?

Thanks!

You might want to check the following link to a Seloc Marine the publication that covers smaller Evinrude/Johnson outboards. I see in the index (there's a link to it within the below web page) under "exploded view", that an 8HP model is included. But you might want to call Seloc to verify that you model is in fact covered. A repair manual is a good thing to have.

SELOC manuals are available at lots of places on-line >> including from this site's sailboatowners.com store.-

Look on youtube. they have instructional videos for just about everything. even if they don't have your particular model, you will learn a lot.

Beautiful, thanks!!

Quick question.....when I bring this home, is it OK to lay the motor in the back of my SUV. I'll run it dry of fuel first.

Anything to worry about (apart from putting it on a thick tarp)?

When I had an Evinrude (same as Johnson) 2 cycle Sailmaster, made circa 1975, so not sure what may have changed, I did the following at the end of each season.

-- Take the ending home
-- Put engine on a wooden horse and ran the engine in a big trash can full of fresh water to flush it out
-- opened the upper and then lower drain plugs on the lower unit and drained all the oil out
-- used a small pump that connects to a bottle of lower unit oil and screwed the pump end into the lower hole of the lower unit. Pump in new 80 wt gear oil until it exits the upper hole. Screw the plugs back in place for both holes
-- take off the prop and grease the shaft with waterproof axle grease, replace prop
-- Open upper unit and remove plugs (x2)
-- Squirt in fogging oil, replace plugs, run engine in barrel until it stops (lots of smoke)
-- remove plugs and squirt in some more fogging oil, pull start cord to distribute.
-- clean and re-gap plugs and replace (or put in new plugs)
-- replace zinc anode under the cavitation plate, if need be
Hope this helps.
