I just purchased a Macgregor 25' that has a Johnson 9.9 "sail master" engine on the back, does anyone have/know how to operate it? It has an electric starter but what do I "push" to start the engine? Also, the throttle arm has 2 twist grips and a "stop button/pull key" on the end, what's the second small trist grip used for?
I'd like to get sailing soon and need this engine running when I launch her. I've got to motor her thru Mission Bay to get to the ocean. Any help....thanks

I also have a Mac 25 with a johnson 9.9 on it. It has a pull start, but the start botton should be on the face of the motor unless it's wired for a remote start. The small twist grip is to keep the throttle open so you don't have to hold it.

I also just purchased a Mac 26 with a 1992 9.9 sailmaster. I see the starter but I don't see a start button does anyone know where it might be located or where i can find an owners manual?

Thanks

I don't know if that model is the same or similiar, but on my 70's vintage johnson 9.9, there is a rubber button/bulb on the right side, front of the engine(faces to the right...push with your left hand, below choke and idle knob...if you look from underneath you will see the wires). That is the start button. It passes all the current of the starter(no solenoid) You can run it without a battery(pull start) as long as the red rubber cover is on the positive terminal and they don't touch.(you can damage the stator windings output is only a few amps) I'll try and find a pic.
