HI, I have a 1986 Johnson SeaHorse 9.9 HP outboard on my 1972 Oday 23. I've noticed that after I run the motor for anything over 20-30 minutes and I shut the motor off. If I need to restart it, it doesn't want to restart. I have an electric start on it, which is very convenient. I've been told that outboards commonly have that problem and it's due to the contacts as well as plug maybe? Any ideas on how I can stop then restart my motor without worries of it not starting and having to wait for the motor to cool down? Yes, it restarts after I give it time to cool down. electronic ignition

Not sure what contacts are, but your motor has no points. Only an electronic ignition. You should check & gap plugs. Replace w/ new if you haven't in a few years. Not likely the problem if it starts cold I think, but good to do anyway. Check your starting procedure. Usually no choke when warm. You may be flooding engine. Don't forget to squeeze bulb on gas tank. A replacement bulb may be in order. They have check valves in them that are supposed to keep gas from draining back. I hope your engine isn't overheating. Check telltale for good water flow. Maybe t-stat needs replacing. If anything my experience w/ outboards is the opposite. I would also check that everything like hoses, carbureter, fuel filter, etc is tight. Get a service manual from the dealer. The motors aren't that complicated to work on & troubleshoot when you have one.

Johnson 9.9 outboard Throttle

Make sure that you have turned the throttle back to the idle position. I though I had a similiar problem and then noticed a week later that I was turning off the enging with a little throttle applied and when I turned down the throttle before starting the engine and the engine started right up, with no choke. Thanks! At the marina, they've put all us sailboats together as best they could...a whole row of them surround me. I asked oen of them the same question, he said to check the thermostat, sounds like the engine may be overheating. Your comments help...thanks! Mark
