Have recently purchased a O'Day 27, 1974, I now have lots of jobs to do on it. . . .I have wanted to get my own boat for years. I only have had limited sailing, but have taken a couple of courses. Taken several Power Squadron courses. Bought the boat and my first time away from the dock was a solo event. . . and it went with out a problem got 6 knots out of her.. Did find that the toping lift was not adjustable just a cable tied to the end of the boom. I didn’t think that the leech was tight enough. Changed this the next day by putting a sheave on it and a line to the boom The traveler had a cam cleat at one end that was the only way to lock the traveler control, but it would slip out and was a pain as I had to leave the tiller to lock the line into it. Next day I removed a cam cleat that was on the starboard cabin top not being used, and mounted it on the port side. There were sheaves mounted on the deck each side of the cabin, for what I am not sure, kept tripping over them so I removed them and epoxied up the holes. Removed and reset all the cabin top handrails, (guess this would be easier for two people). Reset some of the stanchions and push pit and pull pit. How do you get your fingers up inside to get the nuts and washers on the stanchion mounting screws? I couldn’t figure why the mainsail was so hard to raise . . . So I was checking and found that somebody had routed the line so that it was running around a pin in the sheave instead of the roller. Moorage is as scarce as hen’s teeth, therefore I am anchored in a small bay which is a 15 minute row from shore. Yesterday went down to the sea to go for a sail but couldn’t pull the anchor so now have to go and dive on it to see what the problem is down there. Well enough of that for now.
