Have recently purchased a O'Day 27, 1974, I now have lots of jobs to do on it. . . . I have wanted to get my own boat for years. I only have had limited sailing, but have taken a couple of courses. Taken several Power Squadron courses. Bought the boat and my first time away from the dock was a solo event. . . and it went with out a problem got 6 knots out of her.. Did find that the toping lift was not adjustable just a cable tied to the end of the boom. I didn’t think that the leech was tight enough. Changed this the next day by putting a sheave on it and a line to the boom The traveler had a cam cleat at one end that was the only way to lock the traveler control, but it would slip out and was a pain as I had to leave the tiller to lock the line into it. Next day I removed a cam cleat that was on the starboard cabin top not being used, and mounted it on the port side. There were sheaves mounted on the deck each side of the cabin, for what I am not sure, kept tripping over them so I removed them and epoxied up the holes. Removed and reset all the cabin top handrails, (guess this would be easier for two people). Reset some of the stanchions and push pit and pull pit. How do you get your fingers up inside to get the nuts and washers on the stanchion mounting screws? I couldn’t figure why the mainsail was so hard to raise . . . So I was checking and found that somebody had routed the line so that it was running around a pin in the sheave instead of the roller. Moorage is as scarce as hen’s teeth, therefore I am anchored in a small bay which is a 15 minute row from shore. Yesterday went down to the sea to go for a sail but couldn’t pull the anchor so now have to go and dive on it to see what the problem is down there. Well enough of that for now.

Black Water Holding Tank

I want to install a black water holding tank . . . Where is a good place to locate it? I have a fresh water tank under the "V"birth. Not sure how much room I would have in front of the freshwater tank. I was thinking under the cockpit, but that is a long way from the head. What size would you recommend?

The Anchour

Didn't have to dive on the anchor during the night what ever was holding it decided it didn't want to any more so I was able to raise it. Moved over about 20 feet to re-anchour. Stored my dive gear in the empty engine room. Have to check out my starboard running lamp, not coming on. (Note to self: Remember pick up some spare bulbs).

Week end fixes

Went to the chandler and picked up a couple of bulbs, installed, checke, worked, applied dielectric grease, reinstalled. Now all the lamps work . . . Friday evening cast off and headed from Nanaimo to Vancouver, Seas-calm, wind-calm, continued out on the 9.9 4 stroke Suzuki ripping along at a 5.5 knot mind numbing speed. It took 8.5 hours to drop the anchor in English Bay in Vancouver. The night crossing of the straights was great. Grandson enjoyed the phosphorescent display in the bow wake and the fish tracks. Stayed anchored all Saturday and watched the Festival of Lights Fireworks show by Mexico, not to bad a show. The next morning got up when the power boaters started to fly past at 15-20 knots. (Awake by the wake) . . Filled up the fuel tank took 16L. I proceeded to motor out then in the main part of Burrard inlet hoisted the sails. The wind was straight in so had to tack back and forth across the inlet worked my way to Point Atkins and when tacking across, the current was carrying me back into the inlet . . . .after 3 hours I dropped the sails and motored out. . . I was sill having problems with the halyards and left the helm and examined them. I notice the Jib halyard runs down the back of the mast while the Main halyard runs down the front, then they crossed each other into the pulleys at the bottom of the mast. I re-routed them so they didn’t cross over each other. Hopefully takes less effort to raise the main. Anybody know what the bully 2/3 up the front side of the mast is for? There is also a pulley on the foredeck just ahead of the hatch. Almost as if one could rig a Cutter Staysail there, but there is no halyard for it. The other halyards sometimes gets caught on it . . .

Do not think the battery (located in the port cockpit locker) is any good. I am going to install two new batteries inplace of the one that doesn't seem to be holding a charge. . . Think that I will locate them in the engine room space. . . will reqire a little cable re-routing.

My answer to weekend fixes

The 2/3 mast pulley I bet is the spinnaker pole toping lift and the pully on the foredeck is the spinnaker downhaul . . . Since I do not have a spinnaker, (and do not race) I think I will have to get up the mast and remove that pulley and the foredeck pully. Thanks for the info.

BATTERIES

Am going to install two batteries in the engine room space. Going to sail up the coast for a week, not sure where to go or where I will end up but packing the boat up tonight.

I want to try and help

I'm not experienced but I think the sheaves??, are they single blocks, are for a 100/110 jib. mine is rigged that way on my 25. How do you get your fingers????, you use vise grips. I have 5 pair from 'thin nose' to 'regular round and straight'. I am trying to help because it seems a little difficult sometimes to get responses on this forum. I know the knowledge is out there but it's like pulling teeth especially when asking a 'dumb' question as I do sometimes. gene
