do I need to move the engine to get to it or can i move the prop shaft back enough. I don't see how I can move the engine forward at all

If it is the damper, you need to remove the transmission to expose it for replacement. However, I can’t know definitively and am only guessing based on your description. Find someone local who knows engines.
