I was Just reading TOPPING LIFT and aslo have a question. I also have the jiffy reefing system. The three lines exiting the rear of the boom are: Center=Outhaul(Cable) The two lines comming out on either side are for the jiffy reefing. The topping lift is a perminant cable running from mast to end of boom. This is where john is confused everyone was telling him one of the two other lines were One for reefing and the other for topping lift when it is actually a jiffy reefing system. My question is when I purchased my 84 H27. Is Why? I dont actually understand the advantage of the Jiffy System. Both lines exit opposite sides of the booms aft and are attached to the reefing Clew at the rear of the main. I set up mine to be attached to two shackels that I just pop on to the reefing clew. The hole system is pretty dam ugly and unnecessary if you ask me. Does anyone have a better understanding of how to set up. Hopefully someone with knowledge of the JIFFY REEFING SYSTEM in particular.

Jiffy Reefing - in Theory

Jiffy reefing allows you to reef from the cockpit. Installation can vary from boat to boat, but normally, if you have 2 "jiffy reefing lines" coming out of the rear of your boom, you have the ability to have two seperate reefing points, with two seperate clews. Each line would start at each of the "reefing clews, then down to the end of the boom. They then continue forward to the gooseneck, down to the deck and back to the cockpit. Thus, as the winds pick up, you can loosen your main halyard, after pulling the tack to the cringle, you then tighten the "first" jiffy reefing line, pulling the mainsail down to the first reefing point. If the winds pick up more, you can then repeat the procedure for the second reef point, using the second "jiffy reef line". Now, if your sail only has one reef point, you have an extra line hanging around from the end or your boom that isn't being used. And although I have two reef points, I normally don't fasten the second jiffy reef line to the appropriate clew until I need to. Just too much rope flopping around in the wind. Besides, you have to loosen each of them when you hoist the mainsail, or have them flopping around the dock when the sail is on the boom. There are a lot of variations on the theme, but the theory is pretty straight forward.

I agree, incorrectly-rigged double jiffy reefing..

The previous post is self-explanatory.

Bill, re. "Jiffy Reefing"

If you happen to see a West Marine catalog, have a look at the diagram on page 845. It essentially explains the concept of reefing from the cockpit a lot better than my using many words to attempt the same thing. (This is a single line, single reef point setup...)
