I bought an older sailboat that has reef points in the sail but no control lines. It has been many years since I last did this kind of instalation. Is there a one control line set up or a hook or control line at the tack and and a line at the clew or still another way to reef. Any information would be helpful. Don K.

Couple of questions for you, Don

I'm assuming that there are cringles (large metal rings) in the sail at the leech and luff in the same horizontal line as the tack points. Now check your boom. Is there a ram's horn or other similar metal hook on the mast or boom at the gooseneck? Is there also a sheave at the end of the boom with a control line that goes through the boom and exits near the gooseneck? If so, there is a single control line that can be rigged to reef the sail. If not, there are several aftermarket setups that can be added to your boom. Try and track down a Harken catalog. Harken sells a single line jiffy reefing kit. The catalog has photos of the hardware in the kit as well as a clear diagram of how it should be rigged. Let me know if your boom has a ram's horn at the gooseneck and sheave at the end and I'll tell you how to rig the line. It's very easy to do, but it's just as easy to get it wrong. Just looked at the new one. They have also added some neat pictures of rigs for cruising and racing. Check it out, it's a great resource. Glenn WindWisp
