I have a Hunter 23 that I am sailing for the first time, and my question is, do the Jib sheets run outside the side stays or inside? Neither seems quite right..

The lifelines, or the shrouds?On my 23, inside the liifelines but outside the shrouds is best for upwind, outside all is best downwind. compromises...

the shrouds.so you re-route the sheets depending on how you are sailing?

Indeed

You can run it outside the shrouds on a broad or a beam reach. Close hauled, sometime you actually want to get it inside the shrouds.

I should also note

My 23 is probably not the same as your 23: my shrouds go to a chainplate that is located directly next to the cabin, not outboard near the toe rail. I've never felt the need to lead my jib inside of them - all it does is backwind the mainsail.This may sound silly, but I swear I saw a post on here about leading the jib sheets BETWEEN the lower and upper shrouds as being ideal for some situation!
