Jib Sheet Lines

Hello all, we have a 99 361 and I have a question about the jbi sheets. they run thru a block on a track and then back to what looks like a "locking" block where I never used the locking mechanism. this last block does however put an angle to the line and keep the line along the deck, however I noticed that the rope is getting chafed when sheeting in... the problem is that the blck is paralell to deck and it wear against the "walls" of it.is this second block necessary ? I want to guide the lines directly to the winch from the track but not sure there are some forces going the wrong way... cheersGaute

Jib sheet leads

Gaute the blocks do two things. The first is give you a little more mechanical advantage, the second thing is they keep the sheets from rubbing on the gelcoat. You can try running them directly from the genoa cars to the winch but I suspect you'll work a lot harder to trim when the wind picks up. Think how tight they get now and consider it being even more so. For what it's worth I've not experienced the chafing of the sheets. Of course my boat is 3 years newer and perhaps I've just not seen it yet. Let me know how you make out.Mike

I agree that the blocks help the jib sheets approach thewinch at the proper angle. The spinlocks are also greatfor holding a loaded jib sheet and letting you free upthe winch for other activities.

I'll try both ways next time

and see if there is a difference, I agree with the rubbing and suspect it would hit the coat, it also probably helps the lifting from the jib track. the problem is the angle of the spinlock, it should have been more angled so the rope would use the block only, as it is now it also rubs along the top of the block which is metal and creates friction.thanks for the quick feedback guys !Gaute

Not on mine

Gaute on your last comment regarding the sheet rubbing on the block. It's not a problem on mine. The sheet runs cleanly from the genny car through the turning block and then to the winch. Not sure why yours is rubbing. Are the sheets the original or have they been replaced? Just wondering if they're atad too large?Mike

they might be too big

Good point they might be too think, I do not think they are the orignal but were very new when we got the boat. I will take a picture next time and post that here, I do see how the line could creep over the block and hit the metal if its not sized right.does anyone have the correct line dimensions for the 361 ? I always struggle trying to find the correct dimensions.thanks mike !

I knew you'd ask

Gaute, I knew you'd ask about the line size. This is only a guess but I believe them to be 5/8". They're on the boat which is two hours away and I probably won't be going this weekend. I based my guess on the fact I know they're bigger than 1/2" and believe they're about the same size as my dock lines which are 5/8". If you can't find an answer let me know and the next time down I'll measure them for you.Mike

The Jib sheets are 1/2 inch, according to a spec sheeet furnished by Beneteau

thanks Mike and G, I will check mine but when (if) they get really worn and replace I'll make sure I get the correct size.G, do you have a specsheet for all lines on the beneteau 361 electronically ? I would be very interested in this as I think the previous owner moved them around and dimensioned creatively.Gaute

Gennaker use

Gaute, We have a gennaker with our 323 and the spinlocks are used to keep the furled jib tight when we are using the winches for the gennaker. Terry
