Brad, I just replaced my original cleats with Harkin cam cleats. The reason I used Harkin is I had some older ones in my parts box. Removing the original cleats requires 2 people. One to hold the back up on the nut. I have a pic of the cam cleat modification in my public profile. Sailing in low wind single handed is a snap with 1 wrap on your winch. With 2-3 wraps and heavier air your jib sheets will over lap itself and lock up because of the cam cleat height. I am going to put a 1" block under mine soon. Your really going to like this modification on your h23. The Admiral likes it on mine and told me no more chipped fingernail polish, lol. Charles
I don't know what model cam cleats they are. All it says is Harkin and they are old. Just find some cam cleats that fit your jib sheet diameter. I think they are rated by pounds and after hand pulling mine at full load my guess is 200# is ok. That is the original Tiller Tamer brand name and I love it. Depending on wind speed and angle it allows me to leave the helm for 1-10 min. Charles
Good picture Brad, The lazzerete/ cabin divider on the port side was exact dead center of that cleat. The Admiral held backup inside the cabin and I was in the cockpit. She got to lay down and do the starboard side backup. Gotta keep the crew happy. Wish I had your stern rail. Charles
What did you tie your Tiller Tamer lines off to? Doesn't look like a Clam cleat to me. Its hard to tell what it is ithe photos.
BTW: Nice looking boat! What did that big canvas cover w/snaps cost?
Brad, The Tiller Tamer cleats on my boat came on the boat when I purchased it. I call them a jam cleat. After I cleat them I throw the tails over the stern to keep them locked in. Any cleat will work. A clam cleat will work just fine but you will need the one that has a built in fairlead on it. That is what i use on my Mutt for the tiller tamer. Any small deck cleat will work just fine, nylon will be fine and that will be your least expensive way out. If you use a cam cleat you will still need a fairlead or eye mounted before the cam cleat. I have a friend who's wife happens to sew. Lucky for me. She made a pattern for the companion way/ hatch cover and I ordered enough Sunbrella material for her to make it. 4 yards by 60" I think. Total cost was about $50-$60 Sunbrella Material and around $20 for the snap kit. You can purchase one from this web site if you make them a pattern. Sorry but my pattern got trashed/ lost after she made it. Charles
I have Harken Cam-Matic 150 cam cleats installed on a 1" flat cam riser mounted aft of the the winch. I also installed fairleads, Harken part #'s 425R and 425G, on the cam cleats. This seems to work well. I have not touched the original cleats.
