Dear friends, I am sailing a 410 built 1999. Frequently I participate in Club Racing, using a Drifter. (I must apologize for lack of proper English terminology and syntax). I am interested to build and install a "Jib mast", allowing me to tie the lower front edge of the drifter to a point ahead off the front of the boat -i.e. adding a horizontal pole about 2 feet long mounted on the anchor holding frame. (This will allow me to use both Drifter and Jib together in back winds). Has anyone from done it before? How did you mount it to the boat? What materials and sizes have you used (Aluminum, SS, what thickness etc.) Thanks. Daniel danielrs@netvision.net.il

wouldn't that be a bowsprit??

If you add a horizontal pole sticking out of the bow, wouldn't that be a bow sprit?? Seems to me the biggest problem would be strenght. Just thinking, but at it's simplest, a wood pole laid in one of the anchor pulpit channels would need to be heavily secured at it's aft end & I would probably want to add a bobstay to handle forces pulling up on the bow end of the sprit. In short, this would be a serious project for it to be strong enough to withstand the forces involved. Is leaving the bowsprit in place permanently a option for you?

I saw a 410 with a Forespar extendable sprit down in Marina del Rey. The problem with the setup, as I recall, was the loss of use of the chain locker. I think that a better option is to have a bail welded to the end of the anchor roller. I have had this done to mine, but I have one of the early 410s where the roller doesn't extend as far as on subsequent models. My bail is made of 1/2" stock and extends approximately eight inches on a reciprical angle from the lower bails. Works great.

Jib mast - john farnsworth

Dear John, Thanks for your response. Would it be to much to ask for a simple schematic drowing of the pole you have built, to be attached by E-mail to me at danielrs@NETVISION.NET.IL ? Best regards, Daniel Ries
