Jib - Hanks to tape...

I've got an older hank on jib that came with my boat, very good condition, and slightly undersized. I am putting on roller furling and was wondering about taking it to a loft to change it over to a #6 tape as well as putting a UV cover on it. Is this worthwhile, what were your experiences?

Cut of your Jib?

If the clew of the jib is high enough that it will furl properly, your sailmaker can simply add the UV protection and the luff tape. If the clew is lower the foot may build up on itself and not furl cleanly without a re-cut.

measure each leg of the sail

The luff, the leech and the foot. Add them together and multiply by $5.00. The average for prepping a sail for a furler is $5.00/ lf. If the sail is old, I would weigh the costs against a new sail even if it were of lesser quality. That depends on your finances. The difference may only be $200 for a bargain sail or $600 for a very good sail. You have to do the math and determine if it is worth it. Another option is to look around for a used sail that would do the job. There are many used sails out there. Locating them may take some time. Continue to ask about the best sail for your conditions and go from there. Make your own educated decision.... Wish you spring! r.w.landau

Sailcare does it all

I just got my 20+ year old 130 back from Sailcare which cleaned it, added UV protection, luff tape, and re-cut it for use with a new Schaefer Snap-furl for my 1983 O'Day 23. The sail was not in bad shape, it now looks new and should be serviceable for many years. I think having this work done all in the same place by someone who really knows how to care for sails makes sense. CVP

Sailcare

I did the same thing. I had a sailmaker put in the bolt rope but then I sent the sail to SailCare for cleaning and to have the UV strip added. They did very nice work but I'm having second thoughts about the UV cover. The added weight makes it real hard to fill in light air conditions.
