I just bought a 1983 catalina 27 . it only has one winch on the mast and 3 cleats . Also has a harken furling. halyard for furling is not pulled high enough . just pulled hand tight and tied off to a cleat ? only leaves me with one winch for the mailsail halyard ? should i install a jib halyard winch on the mast or run gear back to the cockpit ? Also wher would a good spot be for a spinnaker sheet winch and spinnaker halyard winch ? thanks bryan

Halyard winch

...here's how mine is set up. Main halyard and jib halyards on starboard cabin top. Jib halyards on port side.

Hi Bryan, You don't need separate

winches for each line. Take a walk down a dock at the marina and see how other boats are set up. If you can find a C27 all the better but not necessary. If you want your lines led aft, the most you need are two primary winches on the port and starboard cabintop for halyards and two secondary winches on the coamings for jib sheets.

add a line clutch

add a line clutch for each line led aft. then you can hold a line in position when it is off the winch

Halyard Winch

When I bought my 1977 Catalina 27 it had a winch and some blocks to the starboard handrail side. I have found it very ineffective because of the angles take away the pulling benefits. I like the other answers as well.
