Jib Halyard replacement

I would like to replace the jib halyard (on a roller furling rig if that matters) on my '86 H25.5 since I noticed that where the halyard comes out of the mast at the base, its very brittle. Anyway, what length to buy? What type of line to get? How do I splice the new to the old to pull it through? What else do I need to watch out for? Should I do the main while I'm at it? New Process!

Mel:We just did my friends C'34. We used a large paper clip and some rigging tape. Take the paper clip and stretch it out into an 'S' shape. Insert the top part of the 'S' into the old line like a hook. Do the same into the new line. Make sure that the end of each line butt up to each other. Put some tape around the line to cover the 'S' hook (not too much). Just pull the old line thru and you are ready to go.As far as the line length goes, check out the Boats forum and you should be able to get the mast height. If the measurements are not there, just run a line to the top of the mast and mark it. Measure the length and you are ready to go. Be sure to allow enough extra incase you ever want to run a line back to a jib winch.

Halyard

I replaced the Main halyard with a Samson pre-spliced 95' 3/8" low stretch halyard. I am planning on using the same for the Jib...Its on order right now. As for running it through. I cut the shackle end off of the old and then I butted the new end to the old freshly cut end (I flame that so it does'nt un-ravel) Then I start with a few wraps of rigging tape on the ends and then work my way back about four inches on the old halyard and then repete fo the new one. I test it by pulling at the splice. I was'nt able to pull it loose with a significant amount of force. I then pulled the control end of the old halyard and raised the new one through being careful when the tape splice rolls over the sheeve at the mast head. Worked fine. there are other options you could hand splice it, or use shrinkwrap but the rigging tape work fine for me.
