Many thanks to all who responded to my query about genoa size for my O'Day 222. It looks like the best option for me will be a 125 or 130.

I am planning to move the winches off of the cabin top and mount them on the cockpit coaming within easy reach of anyone at the tiller. My question is about placement of the jib/genoa tracks on the side decks. If anyone has done a similar modification, how far aft or forward have you mounted the tracks. If you have mounted them at least partially forward of where the cabin begins, has this made it awkward when you have had to go forward?

Do you have genoa tracks now? If you have to add tracks, the cut and sheet lead of your headsail determines placement of the track. The sail maker will tell you what measurements he needs to make the sail if you already have tracks.

I mounted my tracks, cars, and Gennie winches on the combings of my O'Day 222. Fortunately, I was able to have these things left off for me while my boat was being built at the Fall River Ma. O'Day factory. I talked to one of the boat designers at the factory about whether it was feasible to mount this hardware on the combings, and he said yes. When I got my boat, I took it out on the lake on a light air day without any of this hardware mounted, and I sort of mocked up an anchor point for where the tracks should be placed in relation to the Gennie. I mounted my winches where it would be very accessible and easy to reach. The one thing that I was dead set in not doing was to mount those horn cheats for these winches. I didn't want cam cleats either. I chose the open clam cleats and I still feel that it was a wise decision, even to this day. I have pics and I can give you measurements, but I'd rather that you do it the way I did. If you go for the 130, you may need to do that anyway. Also, figure on having a roller reefing furler some day, if you don't already have one. I didn't figure on it at the time, but my tracks seem to be OK with my CDI FF-2 Roller Furler. Check out "Owner Photo Album" on this site under O'Day 222 "Trinkka", and you'll find the pictures of my Gennie winch hardware mounted on the combing of Trinkka. Here are some additional pics that I recently took of my tracks, cars, and winches. The Herrreshoff Cleat in the picture is for my roller furler and I installed it in a bad spot. My Starboard Gennie sheet gets caught on it occasionally. I'll probably relocate it to another spot on the combing.

I did the same upgrade last year using the pictures that joe has as a guide. I also have the CDI roller furling and was very happy with the way it came out. I used the lewar 6 winches and cam cleats behind them as stoppers. I wasn't totally happy with the cam cleats but I already had them. It does make the boat easier to single hand not that it was that bad to start with.

Re: Genoa tracks

Peter,
Try out the cam cleats and if you're not happy with them, remove them and install the clam cleats. I guarantee that you'll prefer them over the cams. A lot of guys don't want to have filled screw holes showing on the decks of their boats. I'm the exact opposite. I had two cheek blocks on my combings that I had installed years ago for some foolish self steering device idea that I got out of Small Boat Journal. I got tired of looking at them and removed them and filled the holes. I relocated my pad eyes on my deck to the proper place to make it right for my pivot bridles and had to patch up four more screw holes. When I get a chance, I'll Gelcoat them and make them look good, but for the time being, I just want to use my boat. I really don't care about the small things such as these.
