I recently purchased a 1993 Hunter 23.5 foot boat. The jib appears to attach next to the forestay on the deck. When the jib is attadched this low, it runs into the life lines especially when sailing down wind. Anyone know if this is normal or if you have had the same problem? thanks

Yep, That is How it Works

I did put a snap shackle on the jib and a long D Ring on the bow that brought it up some and made it easier to attach.

Same on '86 H23, but

when serious about getting down wind I detatch the lifeline from the upper part of the pulpit and reattach it to the base, having found raising the sail from the deck as in the previous response sacrifices performance. I have also repaired the sail due to this chafing.

The Fix

You can attach a pennant (extra piece of line or wire with a shackle)to the tack of the jib that will raise it high enough so the clew of the jib clears the life lines. I have a CDI furler and because of the hight added by the furling drum this isn't a problem. I dont think it will be a major problem either way.
