While surfing the Internet, I came across this interesting article on a new type of marine propulsion unit that is currently being developed. A paper was presented at the Technical Conference on Ship Design and Operation held Sept. 4-5, 2002 in the UK on this new design. An Australian engineer invented a steam jet engine with no moving parts that can be used underwater to propel a boat. The theoretical model of the new steam jet engine design has the potential to be more economical to operate than a gear driven gas powered engine. A company called Pursuit Dynamics plc, in the UK is developing the steam jet engine for the recreational boating market. It looks like they are looking at the 40 hp market at first, but it could be designed for the 14 to 300 hp range based on the literature.
