Teen Circumnavigator Jessica Watson successfully completed the Rolex Sydney Hobart race by captaining her crew to 2nd place in her class (38 class). Jessica’s crew was the youngest to take part in race history. This is a very tuff race and it further proves that she is a very accomplished sailor.

I have raced on a Sydney 38 in the Chicago-Mac and Port Huron-Mac with a few deliveries in between. A fast, well built boat with lots of sail area. As the name implies, it is a good boat for down under. The whole crew deserves a well done.

I have Sydney 38 I've done some electrical work on. It's a pretty sweet boat.. It also strikes me as fairly stoutly built for a light weight racer...

If you've been following "another challenge" you'll know that it was a highly publicized syndicate sponsored primarily by Elle Bache, of whom Jessica is a major client. The team was put together 6 or 7 months ago and they trained full time for 3 months leading up to the race. The training consultant, who oversaw their program, was himself a contestant with his own syndicate. The Sidney-Hobart is a very, very prestigious race.

I bring all this up to magnify the power that this young lady has in Austrailia. Besides the sailing aspect, she is a very strong organizer and promoter with outstanding leadership abilities........ look for her to attain even greater things.

A very differently motivated sailor, Laura Dekker, is now on the last leg of her circumnavigation....... which she will complete in the Carribbean!... word is that, instead of returning to the Netherlands, she plans to continue right on through the Panama canal....again... destined for New Zealand. She missed it the first time around, you see, and has decided that since she was born on her parents yacht in NZ that she is technically a citizen, she will live there. I find this interesting because she has become quite a celebrity back in the Netherlands..... but has chosen to avoid that life and seek something different. What I think....... is that she just wants to keep sailing.... and the south pacific is vast.

Sorry to confuse you..... any other significant contriutions?
I guess the tangential discussion on Sydney yachts must have come from a word association kind of thing.
Wasn't me that was confused. I hear these things happen as we get older!:poke:
I also wasn't responding to your post.

I agree finishing second in her class in a race like that is a great accomplishment for any sailor!
