My friends sail a Jeneau Sun Odyessey 37. We were hitting 9 knots. Theoritical hull speed is approximately 7.55 for this boat. Can it be that fast at 9 knots? I think the Catalina 36 would be going really fast if it hit 8 knots as the hull speed is 7.4

hull speed

I had a Catalina 30 that would hit 10+ knots when sailing down wind even though the hull speed was only 6.2. We were actually planing the boat at this speed and able to do so with high (20-30 knots) wind speed and with the wind at our back.

Be very careful to not let your

guard down when you are sailing like that or you could learn the meaning of pitchpoled.

Were you really going 9 knots through the water

Was the 9 knots with GPS? If so was there any tidal flow up and down the coast that could artificial boost your speed. I was walking at 483 mile/hour last week as measured on my GPS. True Story ! Its important to note that I was walking down the aisle of a airplane at the time ;) Also note that many in-water knotmeters are notoriously innaccurate or variable depending on hull placement. Now I don't doubt that a Jenn 37 could do 9 kts I am just making sure it was, what it was. While surfing down a wave I bet a lot of boats could do 9 kts. In perfect conditions (flat seas and 20kts of wind off your beam) I bet you could easily pass most boats theoretical hull speed

Pitchpoled

Defined: pitch·pole (pĭch'pôl') intr. & tr.v. Nautical., -poled, -pol·ing, -poles. To flip or cause to flip end over end: The raft pitchpoled in the rapids. Sounds bad...

The 9 knots was more of a constant .....

.....it wasn't just going down the waves. We did have a good bit of wind but we were reefed. I'm just wondering if something was up with the speed sensor? He also said he sailed the boat previously at 9 knots. Maybe someone out there can confirm the swiftness of the Jeneau. It is a nice, slick looking boat and is longer, especially at the waterline, but 9 knots seems like it could be a stretch.

Knotmeters are notoriously inaccurate

They are good for instantaneous speed fluctuations but not absolute speed. If it wasn't verified along side a GPS I would be suspect. It might be off by only 5% but even then that would be 8.5 kts. Not that it couldn't have been going 9 but I would expect that speed under spinaker. What was the sea state, wind speed and direction of apparent wind at that speed

It's simple and happens all the time

surfing down wavefronts, inaccurate knotmeters, clean hull...

Surf down the wave, bury the bow,

following wave lifts the stern, the bow comes to a stop and over you go. You can also broach which is not quite so dramatic but potentially deadly. Here the bow stops and the stern is thrown to one side in the trough, the boat may be rolled.

Are there any rules of thumb...

...for pitchpoling or broaching that relate the length or beam of a boat to the frequency or amplitude of the waves? Can one broach on flat lake water if the wind is strong enough, but not so strong that the sails have been taken down? ...RickM...

Memorable Pitchpole

First, with regard to the Jenneau boat speed, I've no doubt that it could EASILY do 9 knots (in say, a little over ~25 kts or so). Weather or not the knotmeter is accurate, or how accurate, (the speed varies and is not constant) can get into a hair-splitting discussion but, basically, the boat should have no problems doing this under the right conditions with a clean bottom and a feathering prop. With regard to pitchpoleing, there was a memorable one here locally a few years back, in the Foulweather Bluf Race. The multihulls were the last to start and there was a killer racing tri (out to show the sleds a thing or two), about 70 or 80 foot long, that left the start line and a short time later, in about 12 kts of wind, the boat was really zipping along and burried one of the hulls in the wake of another boat (ferry, powerboat?) and pitchpoled. Northwest Yachting magazine had a double spread picture-frame sequence showing it going over - awsome. What was really interesting was, as I recall, one of the crew didn't even get wet! The pictures showed him, with the boat nearly vertical, standing on one of the armas holding onto the center hull and he just followed it around as the boat went bow-over. Multis are very stable boats - in both directions.
