Javelin mast step

Just acquired a Javelin, in fairly good condition but with an unusual mast knee/step. Looks like someone cut approximately 24 inches off the bottom of the mast and installed a 2-pin mast step between the sections. This apparently was to allow for lowering above deck level. The prolem is, the lower section does not anchor to anything and it moves about in the cut-out in the plywood sole of the cuddy. Any ideas if this was a factory option, or how it was supposted to work? May have to get creative, but would prefer to stay original, if possible. Year unknown, serial 26126.

Mast Step

AC - Two things I can think of, either you're describing an maststep at deck level and a compression post below it, or as you say it was a modification. Either way you need to secure it. I would get another two pin fitting and secur it to the hull, then put the mating part on the mast and secure it. You'll be good to go with minimal modification. I would want to know what failed below, but it probably doesn't matter. Make sure there is no damage to the hull, though, before you put the new step in. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
