Javelin Centerboard line length?

Greetings! I've been helping to rebuild an O'Day Javelin for our local community center sailing program, we found it in a complete mess, namely the centerboard was incredibly bent up. Well, we got it replaced, but to take it out, we had to cut a line that holds it on. Now that we're trying to put the new centerboard in, we're puzzled as to how long the original line was, because we were too dumb to measure it. Does anyone know how long this line is? If not, do you know somewhere else I may ask or find an answer? Thanks, Jonathan Bell Chilmark Community Center Sailing Program

Centerboard Line

I used to own a Javlin and never had to replace the centerboard line. However, as far as the length you will need, I would measure about what you will need and then add an additional amount to be safe. I'm guessing that you should start with 3-4 feet of line. As I recall, the original line diameter was about 1/4" or 5/16". It seemed small for the strain it was under but it never broke. Your best bet would be to measure the pully block diameter or take one with you when you purchase the line. If the boat is on a trailer, tie the centerboard in the up position. Launch the boat and through trial and error you will be able to tie off just the right amount needed and cut off the excess.

Thanks!

Great, Thanks for your prompt response! We'll try this next time that we get to the Javelin, at the moment we're working on getting another boat (O'Day Daysailor) all set and launched (The rudder had been severely damaged, but we just got it repaired), then I think we'll launch the laser, and finally get to the Javelin. I called the O'Day folks, and they wanted to sell me an entire kit for the centerboard, blocks, wire-line, etc. for 40 dollars, but that's money better spent elsewhere I think.
