I was out last weekend and had a wonderful sail in perfect conditions for the 170. My crew went to furl the jib and the line got stuck under the drum. I looks like it is wrapped at least once around under the drum. I ended up wrapping the sail by hand and cleating the lines on the bow cleats without resolving the problem. I’m not sure how this happened or how to avoid it. My boat is on a buoy and I don’t want to take if off the water unless I have to. Do I need to take down the mast or are there other suggestions for how to resolve such a problem?

I can guess

I've had that happen a few times, but never when I had slight tension on the furling when letting the sail fly. For me it was always a two person or two hand task. One pulling and one easing the line. What happens when the sail rolls out is the furling line leaps forward and snags on a pin above the furling drum and spins the line up over/under the drum.

hmm

Im not familiar with the 170 factory furler, but on a CDI system, you can remove a pin from the upper portion of the drum, and the drum can slide up the extrusion. With the pin in place, the drum AND extrusion can slide up the forestay. I've had the whole shebang slide up the forestay once and get a turn underneath..but the line got hard to pull and I stopped, went forward, slid the drum up, and ended up feeding the entire furling line through to unwind it. I'm glad it wasn't too windy.
