At the time the boat I now own was put up on the hard, the anchor was brought up and there is no slack in the anchor chain to remove it from the electric windlass. The windlass does not have a reversing switch which I can locate. I am open for suggestions on how to remove the chain from the windlass. My current idea is to just cut the chain to relieve the tension and then reattach to the aanchor. Open for other suggestions including how to reverse the electric motor.

Use a winch handle

My windlass has a receptacle for a winch handle. When I turn the handle counterclockwise, the windlass releases ( free wheels ) and the chain releases.

isn't there a shackle

connecting the chain to the anchor, that you can just remove to free up the chain? Then you can play with the windlass to figure out how it works.

schackle is rusted tight

The schackle is rusted in tight-and heat and penetrating oil has not worked. I will get the sucker off one way or another--just want to know if others have had the same problem and what preventative measures were taken to alleviate the problem thenext time.

have used the winch handle

and it has not worked. Have followed all directions on the windlass manual. Obviously the winch is not working and I have come to this posting area because I have run out of thoughts to relieve the tension other than cutting the chain.

reversing the leads

is not possible unless I start cutting fiberglass as the whole unit is encased.

Reversing Leads

It gets its power from somewhere; reverse the leads on the power side. If that does not work, suggest a bolt cutter for the shackle. RD

Contact Manufacturer?

What brand is it? Why not contact the manufacturer's tech rep? Sounds like the shackle should be replaced anyway so why not just cut it with a hacksaw? Don't replace it with a "Made in China" model!

locked windlass

Unlock gears On my 42 (1991) I can tighten and un-tighten the gears of the windlass. On the side of the chain holder of the windlass, the two holes are to put in a special handle to tighten the chain-holder to the motor. My suggestion would be to put a lot of WD-40 onto the system, let it sit for a couple of hours and un-tighten the gear and have the chain-holder run free.
