We are heading up out of the Chesapeake Bay up through the C&D and out the Delaware heading up toward Jamestown/Newport RI.

The plan is to hit the East coast early to mid-week next week. We are looking to spend two or three days in the Jamestown/Newport region and I'm wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for anchorages in that area that may be very cool to hang out in.

I'll probably have more questions of places to visit as we are spending the next two months sailing up the East coast reaching as far north as Nova Scotia. But I'll keep the questions more focused at this point. Our first stopping point will be in the Jamestown/Newport region. We have a fair bit of draft, the boat has 7' 3" below the water line.

We are looking for any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

p.s. I'm not sure our air draft - but it's very high. This is not a boat that could do the ICW at all....

Draft won’t be a problem there. Anchoring in Newport anytime in July is problematic and mooring reservations in Jamestown may also be few and far between now but try there. Less crowded, less noisy and an easy dinghy or ferry ride to Newport.

I vote for Jamestown. You can also get moorings at Newport, but demand is high. Anchoring at Newport is also very possible, but it can get crowded. Mid-week arrival is best.

We used to get a mooring in Jamestown without much trouble. I have to admit that it was 10 years ago. It was a relief to be there after the commotion in Newport. I think we reserved through Conanicut Marine (conanicutmarina.com).
I think you can also anchor on the other side of the island for an even more quiet experience. You may get info on that from Dutch Harbor Boatyard (dutchharborboatyard.com).
In Newport there is anchoring in Breton Cove and possibly off King Park. There is bus service from either to the commotion of Newport attractions. The anchorage area is large but there are a lot of boats there. I think there are moorings there too.
We've been on moorings in Newport harbor. We arranged that through a third party which I can't remember the name of.
That's all I've got.

On weekends the Newport anchor zone can get crowded, arrive during the week and you should be able to find a spot. Same with moorings. Don't use a Danforth style anchor, need something that will hold in the Newport muck. Newport is a great town with lots going on. Jamestown is nice but it is about a mile-and-a-half from Newport so not as convenient and pretty quiet. If you are in Jamestown, check out Ace's Pizza, some of the best pizza on the planet - old world baker turned pizza maker.

Thanks much for all the advise. We are arriving mid-week. We were able to find a mooring, couldn't in Jamestown but did find one in Newport. Go figure...

I'm definitely trying Aces Pizza! Thanks for the tip!
