jabsco seal kit problem

Boat just out of the yard 1st time since Katrina. Could say the head has been dry for a while!! New thru hulls and bottom job. Previous to Katrina we discussed a small leakage around the piston rod. I ordered an overhaul kit recently, but only installed the piston rod seal kit replacment portion. I followed the instruction about using tape to protect the rod and stayed in the end area when using a plyers. The piston seal still leaks water when pumped. Any sugestions other than buying/installing a new head?

J, I have two heads on my older Beneteau, one too many in my mind. I rebuilt one using the $76.00 rebuild kit. Then noticed the whole head was on sale for $149.00. Ripped out the second head and replaced the whole unit. Why anyone would use the repair kit is beyond me. The Jabsco is universally hated so expect an avalanche of anti-Jabsco sentiment. People will dump on that dumper but the unit has worked well for me. Nothing gets a sailor's sphincter in a knot more than a wonky crapper. In Jabsco Heaven, Pete

...may be to try the new Jabsco drop-in replacement from Johnson Pumps. See the link for availability on this site. I talked to them and they assured me it was designed as a replacement but is NOT a clone. Given your description, I doubt there is anything you can do to stop that leak. Jabsco pumps don't do well in re-build. Rick D.

One suggestion: install the rest of the kit

The parts you omitted are most likely to be the ones you need, 'cuz after sitting for that long, they all have to be dried out, rotted, distorted, etc. Why invest the $$ in a kit and the time and effort to take the pump apart to do only half the job??? What were you planning to do with the rest of the parts?

I just replaced mine

The repair kit and a new seat were more money than a completely new head. The new head has a locking mechanism to prevent back flow that the old one did not have. The head cost me $135 locally. Port Supply price was $140. You could just finish putting in the repair kit but why?

Because he's already spent the money for it, that's why

Should he have bought the kit in the first place? No. But he's got it, and he can't return it for a refund. If installing the rest of the parts in it solves the problem, he doesn't have to spend any more money for a new pump. If it doesn't, trying it hasn't cost him anything but a little more time and effort to make sure that he needs a new pump before he spends more money.

back to you Peggy

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Overcome by some family life issues. I wasn't prepared to get into the entire kit work just yet. My thinking is that if water is dripping out adjacent to the piston that it would be the piston rod seal that was leaking, not some other part. I'm retired, cheap, and Katrina bit into my $$ significantly. Have I overlooked something/ is there a part in the kit that would still cause water to drip out of the piston seal when pumping other than the piston seal? BTW, the kit I purchased was the 29045-0000 'A' kit. Thanks all, Jim

Hmmm...

I decided to give Mike Irving in tech services at Jabsco a call to help me figure out just what part you need to solve your problem. And he did--a part that's not in the kit. Email him, and he'll send it to you: michael.irving@itt.com

Thanks, Before I started this thread, I called Jabsco and the phone receptionist put me thru to someone's voice mail and I received NO response. I'll try this, thanks. Jim
