It's raining "INSIDE"

Have a 1984 H-31 Anytime it rains, or I use a hose on the cabin sea hood, water leaks into the boat from several spots around the sliding companion way hatch. There seems to be a design flaw. Water does not properly drain away from the "closed" hatch. Any similar experiences? Any solutions? It appears to be a mojor project to remove the sea hood to examine the area where the hatch slides under the hood. Sorgenj@Bellsouth.net

Me too!!!

Me too! I even took all the screws out of the hood and discovered it's being held down by some kind of sealant. I would love to know what to do about this.

Probably......

Well, I do not know if it is a design flaw, but it could have been designed better. The water will accumulate in the tracks that the slider slides on. The forward end of the track is open. If water accumulates is may pour out of the forward end of the track. Be sure that the aft end is clear so it can drian out there. We purchased a companionway cover for our boat several years ago and almost totally eliminated this problem. If you EVER have the time to remove the seahood, you could put some caulking or pieces of rubber in the forward end of the track to help elminate most of this water problem. Be sure that you leave the cover on while washing the boat.

Another possibility

I have an 81 H30 which has a dodger. Therefore I don't have the leaky cabin seahood. However, I do have the leaks! My leaks are around the starboard and port side teak on which the traveler is mounted. I caulked around the teak and eliminated most of the leak. However, now I noticed that the teak is just about completely rotted. I am planning to replace the teak or possibly use West Marine Plastic Building Material - Item # 1215375 (P.441 of current catalog). Has anyone tried to use this Plastic to replace teak? If so, how did it work? Len

rebedded

The previous owner of my H31 removed the sea hood and rebedded it. It also has a dodger and a companion way cover. I experience no leaks on the boat. Len, the previous owner also removed all of the teak on the exterior of the boat except the hatch boards and replaced it with the plastic materials. No maintenance required.

Len, where is your traveler located?

We have a 79 H30 and the traveler in the cockpit right in front of the companionway *grr. We just took our traveler off in preparation for painting & our teak wasn in bad shape also. I don't think we will replace it with teak. My husband says he might try using corian (if we can find a little piece) or that Starbourd stuff.

Tammy - Len's Traveler is located...

just forward of my dodger and goes across the cabin seahood which is just forward of the sliding companionway hood. In fact the traveler is bolted fast to the cabin seahood at 4 inch intervals. If I pull the companionway sliding hood aft and remove it, I am able to access from below and remove the nuts to the traveler bolts. Does this answer your question? Len
