I would be sad if my bilge pump froze hard like that. One of the reasons I try to steer clear of boats in the mid latitudes. A lot of them are not properly winterized and tucked away for winter like our boats in the north.

Winter blues
I was finally able to get down last weekend to shovel all the snow off of mine, when I got there the boat looked like it was on plane from all the snow in the cockpit! My deck drains had a little freezing, but definitely not as bad as your slip neighbors'.
Check out the wide angle shot of the creek, the next picture is the same just very cropped to almost the center of the shot. That sailboat has been anchored there since at least November!!! Not sure why someone would anchor there boat out all winter in a place that freezes...

I moved down here from Michigan in the winter .... It apparently followed me.
Glad my boat is safely tucked away inside a barn with a strong roof. I was going to move it down here to VA so i wouldn't have to haul out every fall. Now I'm not so sure.

I hate saying this but what I see is a boat that's been ignored by its owner.
I do not understand why an owner would not take the time to sweep the snow off of the deck & cockpit on a boat that's in the water year round. Not only is this bad for the boat but it also puts additional stress on the docks putting everyone elses boats in harms way. I won't even get into the frozen bilge......

Bob, I won't allow you to continue uneducated. I regret to say that I have not been to my boat since it was hauled last fall. This has not been a choice but rather a great concern for me. I have been physically unable to walk without a cane , to carry a ladder, or to shovel snow this winter. The result is that much of the things that I do as a matter of pride I have been forced to neglect.
You may think "then hire someone." I am self employed and the economy has shut down the home repair business and I have no income from working.
So now you know a bit more about why someone may appear to be neglecting his boat.

Did you happen to notice where the boat is located? Are you aware that they got 2-3 feet of snow in 24 hours. followed by another foot and 60mph winds before they could get the roads cleared from the first one? What you see in those photos could have happened in 24 hours.If you can't get out of your own driveway--and some could, some couldn't for days--it's kinda hard to get to the boat to clear the snow off it.

In defense of my neighbor
I believe that is his scupper drain that is frozen over (I could be wrong). We did get 25" and then a few days later another 6". The owner is 99% most of the time living and working in another state (it was Alabama for a while). It was also quite a bear to get down the dock just to take that picture - definitely wear your snow boots.

I do understand the circumstances down south with the bizzare weather that's come your way recently but in all seriousness, I mentioned this because I remember back in the early 80's when we got hit with a freak snowstorm that dumped a foot of that wet heavy industrial type of snow towards the end of april. The docks were breaking off the seawall under the weight of the snow & the boats tied up to them & started floating down the merrimack river. I had forgotten all about that until I saw that picture.
The hell with the driveway, I'm heading to the marina.

Bob, You guys leave your boats in the water through the winter? What do you do come spring when the ice goes out? We have some marinas that don't leave their docks in the water during the ice season. And the Coast Guard even replaces some of the bouys during the ice season. From Maine to Oregon two feet of snow in one storm was to be respected and a foot of ice on the river took everything with it when it left. I know because I have been there.
Peggy's right. Certain areas just didn't get cleared for a long time. I tried calling my marina after the storm and it took a few days before the staff was back in. The road leading to the marina hadn't been plowed and they couldn't get there. The day they finally were able to get in the second storm hit...
