It's about the bow

Edwardo snapped a bow line, bent the starboard bow railing and smashed up the black fiberglass "cover" (I don't know the name of this part) aft of the forestay and forward of the chain locker. The chocks/rails mount thru the "cover." What's the correct name for this piece? Is a replacement part available? Thanx.

Bow plate

The part you are asking about what I call the bow plate. Seems you have some repairs to do so while you are at it, I highly suggest you stay away from the plastic. I have an HC33, 1973. I cut the bow plate out and replaced it with a 5mm thick piece of stainless steel, unpolished. I used cardboard for a template, dry fitted all the hard ware and made sure I tied it in with the toe rails for strength. I elevated the cut plate using 2X4s and rolled my van tire up on it. The curve turned out perfectly to the curviture of the bow. I then layed a solid bed of marine caulk, added another back plate, bolted everything together, and painted it. Then I drill new holes for the bow roller and cleats. man, that baby is strong and if anything goes wrong with it, you can call sea rescue for sure. It is a bit of work but well worth the effort. You can also mount your bow pulpit to it as well. Good luck, Okiman

Thankx

Thanks. Your alternative is more wotk, but clearly much stronger than the stock item. Thanks.

Go for It

Jerry, My mistake, my HC33 is a 1976 model. Replacing the bow plate is extra work but very doable within a weekend if you assemble all the materails ahead of time. I took a hand held side grinder with cut wheel, and cut the plastic off at the edge of the toe rails. If you send me your email address I would be happy to send you some pictures of the project. This really strengthens the entire bow area and you will never worry about your cleats loosening up or your bow roller coming off. Okiman

I'll take a set

My bow plate is looking tired too. I noticed over the weekend that it looks like it is ready to fail. Can I get a set of the photos too? (finnbardalton@yahoo.com)

Please send or post pictures

Okiman, Could you possibly either post or email me pictures, as I am thinking of some bow improvements for a 2 anchor pulpit, and the anchor rode locker cover is also chipped and could use some repair. pullenbob@yahoo.com much appreciated thanks Bob

I backed mine with SS

Our H30 (1977) had been damaged when sea tow pulled us in from offshore at about 8 knots, and almost pulled the two large cleats up through the black fiberglass bow plate. We removed the two cleats, and backed the bow plate with plywood glassed in from the underside with tabbing that runs down both sides of the bow. Then we redrilled the bow plate and installed two new chocks and an anchor roller, backed by smaller SS plates for each installation. Then we set two cleats and a sampson post further back on the bow. I may not have been damaged as much as you, but ours was not too major a job. Sorry I don't have pictures, but you can zip down to FF Harbour at New Bern and check mine out anytime.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. My major concern is not the deck area (repairable as was yours) but the bend to overlap the deck/hull joint. I plan on being in your area starting on the 29th and wouldn't mind having a look. Thanks again. jb
