It's been a while and a lot of stuff has impeaded my progress, but the ol' girl is up, I cut off the 'centerboard' and have it home to start work. Thank goodness for the great pictures posted in this forum late last year, they are my bible now! Hopefully the pictures will upload so you can see what I'm undertaking, and please feel free to jump in with your 2c worth.

I probably shouldn't be surprised, but dag gone this thing is heavy! No scale but I'm guessing close to 100#? Is that right?

Kristopher, if you're out there, I'm going to need one of those bronze bushings, drop me a line with the costs and shipping. ( armesy1954@yahoo.com)

Not that I need it right away, but would someone point to the site where I can see the rigging for the up haul, please?
Thanks & hope you can make out the pics. Tim

Thanks Brad I'll pull that up and look at it.

Small update, I noted a separation line between the 'addition' and the keel so I started to lever it a little bit. I heard a screeching noise just like a nail makes when it's pulled out of a board? Oh yeah, the 'modifier' did actually use nails to start his make over!

Well OMG would be not overstating your project. I am guessing the original c/b well is intact.
It looks like a big project. I comend your efforts.

Good Luck,

Scott

Most of the well appears to be intact. But that brings up a question, Is the well sealed? There is a small opening left side forward at the top of mine, I'm wondering how water is kept out of the cabin during manuvering?
More demolition... err... repair prep. Not only were roofing nails employed, but also dry wall screws to hold on the three sheets of 1/8" lead wrapped on the blade. Some came out, some didn't. Also found some substantial damage to the blade leading edge, and ofcourse the fairing areas are gone on the blade trailing edge. So... some new foam, a little glass and resin, and a ruler, and the all important pictures and a week or so I'll have me a new centerboard. Oh, I got the haul system schematic, and found the phone contact for the bushing and pivot pin.
Thanks again for your help, I'll keep you informed of progress.

Yes the c/b well is sealed and part of the hull. The attach bolts are just outside the c/b well area.

Ok, I'll seal that up after I reinstall the pulleys and cables. In fact, I may just cut the top off the housing for better access for the repair/install of new stuff, it'd probably be easier.

Worst fears confirmed this morning, what I have is a complete made up 'mini-keel'.

I will now scale the pictures and lay out a new swing keel. Actually this way should be easier and give a cleaner finished product. Does anybody know for sure how much lead is in the swing keel? The one good thing I found is two pigs bolted to the foam forming the leading edge of what I have. That at least makes sense and unless otherwise advised, I'll use them in the same manner on my new piece.
Speaking of the trunk housing, has anyone done a folding table from composites to make it lighter and easier to handle? The one installed,( while obviously not original), is quite heavy.

There is no lead in the c/b. all the ballast is in the under the floor boards.
Have you thought about buying a used c/b.
You have only one pully. Very simple set up. Do you have the drawings?

Great, no lead! I've already encased the upper counter pieces. Sigh... Well, no biggy, I'll just unencase them and go back to shaping the foam. (which by the way is very light and gets into everything and everywhere) Now I know why surf board folks do this in a an enclosed place with very vacuum operated tools! I kid you not, it was a blizzard in the garage with the router going!
I printed the rigging for the SK and will go over that probably in a couple of weeks. I should have this done by the Monday, and will start on the hull bottom. Got to remember to order the shaft and bearing, I'll get the SS angle locally and fab the angles. What do you figure, bronze or Stainless for the attaching hardware?

I believe mine is aluminum and last time i had it off I used stainless hardware. I am not sure that was not a mistake on my part because stainless does stretch and may shear easier than steel. I would use corrosion resistant steel hardware. Also use 4200 to attach the hardware because you will be pulling your c/b evey few years. I think the c/b well is fiberglassed in and part of the stucture of the hull. Check with Hunter maybe to be sure. I think that the dimentions for the brackets are in the hunter 22 manual. All the best.scott
