This Yanmar 2qm15 has been on the hard SINCE 1998, it was properly put up by my simple standards. Rusted in spots, exhaust elbow rusted thru, etc.
Well, drained all fuel, changed oil, changed transmission fluid, changed filter, filled a bucket with water, primed it a few times,
Hit the button and she fired right up, ran it about 4/5 mins several times!!!! Impressive from Yanmar for this engine to sit 16 years and it fired up!!!!!!
So my next question is what size sea water strainer should I use and can you post pics of your set up for the strainer

no less than 3/4 inch strainer and 1 inch would be better ...you may also want to up grade your through hull seacock to a 1 inch while you are at it ...groco makes a good bronze one with a ss strainer that you can service from the top of the water strainer by removing the round insert and lifting the basket out to clean it out ......also look at mainsails compass marine site on flange mounted seacocks...oh and don't use a in water strainer type seacock...its a little on the expensive side but well worth it in the long haul lot cheaper than burning up that yanmar JMHO

I might be upgrading my cooling system and this sounded interesting. I now have a Groco strainer...would it be a good idea to ditch the strainer intake and just go for a regular round opening? I have the slotted strainer (not the kind with little holes...more like a grate). Is the idea that the Groco will filter-out everything and the slotted external intake is just a blockage hazard waiting to happen? I am on the hard now and this is my big chance to do things right!

I was thinking I could just dremel out the strainer grating...leaving the intake as-is and avoiding the work of through-hull replacement.

yes you don't need the grated strainer they just cause trouble with growth and all .....the round through hull one is the best ...but you can cut out the grate with a dremel tool but personally i would put the round one in while on the hard wont be that much involved

Slotted strainer

My last boat was an 1980 H30 with the 2QM15. I had a terrible problem with eel grass foling the engine while sailing Barnegat Bay in NJ so I replaced the original round engine water intake (1/2"?) with a 1" aft-facing slotted strainer thru hull.
I sailed for many years after that and never had any fouling of the raw intake.

Slotted thru hull strainer

I sold that boat years ago - so no pic's available. I used a standard Groco slotted thru hull fitting but faced the slots aft so the eel grass would flow past and not into the thru hull. It worked great for me. Not sure about the hydrodynamics but the larger diameter thru hull opening should have reduced the suction energy of the engine and lessen the chance of material being drawn into the thru hull.
