In a recent response I was told to "watch out as the motor was overpowered for my boat" I appreciate the comment now want to know what to watch out for. I have a Hunter 260 with that came from the PO with a Honda, with a pwer blade prop, 15hp four stroke.

I have read through the post regarding this topic and left a liittle confused. This is what I do not get:

1. If it is a concern over weight the Honda 15 weighs 8 lbs more than a 9.9, that does not seem to be too much. There is no sign of any cracking after 8 years so that seems to be OK.

2. I know that the motor will exceed the hull speed...so I do not run the motor at full throttle. That does not seem to be a bad thing either. It is a thruster model that improves reverse thrust when backing by 65% so they claim it needs less revs.

3. It is an electric/manual start with a charging system connected to batteries along with a solar pannel. I think a 12 amp output. Not big into motoring in AZ inland lakes but seems like a nice to have.

4. Having the extra thrust from a 15hp, when needed seems to be a good thing if not over used.

What are the concerns I am missing after considering the above. I am not being sarcastic in anyway just not clear on what the real issues are except the PO spent too much buying too much motor. It seems having the power when needed is a good thing to be able to cut through chop or fight off a fast tide.

Is it torque created by too much thrust?. Is there a real safety issue or the PO just spent too much overpowering the boat.

Thanks

Tim

My thoughts were that as long as one used the throttle with some degree of care and understanding (which sounds like you have) then one would be fine. A hard throttle blast while turning might overstress the bracket.

You have the setup I would want. I have been in strong headwinds and a steep chop and there is no substitute for enough power to keep you moving. I am a firm believer in the max hp your boat is rated for. It makes no sense to me to have just enough motor to get you in and out of your slip or to motor in calm weather.

upon checking the specs for your boat I find it is rated for a 10 hp motor. However I still think you are ok with a judicious use of the throttle. If I was buying your boat I would be really happy with the extra hp.
