A very long week, 4 new ports and two side windows installed, motor is in and bolted down, all toe rail bolts tightened, all winches cleaned and greased, whole galley (all wood panels)replaced (except for the formica),Setee panels replaced (both sides/top and bottom), sink cutout done, all thru-hulls replaced as well as ball valves, old transducers out new ones in, stanchions have new bolts and are sealed, water heater in, lpg locker in, bow plate is off and at the Stainless shop to be fabricated, and I am pooped. I'm working on the Head Peg! (couldn't have done it without you!) Its a foot race to the ocean. Does anyone have any thoughts, reccomendations, pros or cons on a battery isolator, I have a new Vetus 3.09, 3cyl, 25 hp diesel. It has a (Standard) 40 amp alternator. I will have two house batteries and one starting battery. I think an isolator is appropriate, but I am allergic to electricity, and I don't have a clue. We are going to be on a mooring so I want to do it right. I am also looking at a small solar panel. Would anyone like to wire our boat for us, I will buy the beer and wire!

Suggestion

Two individual isolators, one for each bank plus a battery combiner (relay) gives a flexible setup with little chance for errors by tired sailors. Best keep away from diode setups to ensure charging regimes are met with little complexity.

Not an isolator fan.

Bob, if you search the Forum Archives I think you will find some negative comments regarding isolators. I use one combiner between a house battery positive post and the starter battery positive post. Nothing else is required. When I open the boat I turn the battery switch to #2(house). It stays there...always. The starter battery is strictly backup. No one is to touch the battery switch. Any amps from the house used to start the engine are replaced immediately. I do periodically check the starter battery level. It is made easier with a Link 2000 but any meter will do.
