Isaias Report from New Jersey

In our Barnegat marina yesterday, wind gusts surrounding us were 65 to 75 MPH with one gust off shore at Surf City / Ship Bottom at 109 MPH. It appeared to be a water spout that later touched down in Barnegat inland as a tornado. @Ward H and I were reportedly unharmed. I may have been rubbing against a piling at the stern quarter our witness says. Both Ward and I went to our boats on Monday to seek a more sheltered slip location and turn our bows into the wind. We waited until the projection seemed certain that the eye would pass to the west, therefore most of the wind would be southerly instead of northeasterly. That's how it worked out. The eye pretty much went right up the center of the state. The shoreline was basically to the east of the eye wall, so the winds did not abate all day long. Winds came mainly from the southeast early on in the morning, shifting to south and then southwest by end of day, finally dropping off by 6 or 7 in the evening. I drove thru sunshine going home from the office. Rivers were flooded and a lot of tree debris down on the ground, but I didn't see too many trees down or power lines down on my drive through the farmlands. I had 3 detours on the way home, though, probably from power lines.

Our friend with a Catalina 34 actually pulled a stern piling out and suffered some damage to the Bimini frame and maybe at the bow. The Marina crew was able to pull the boat away from the bulkhead before too much damage it seems. They were struck by lightning and lost their instruments this spring while on stands before launching. Not a good year for them. Other boats had some significant damage and lost headsails. it seems. Power is out at the marina. I didn't bother to plug in anyways. Most boats that I saw on Monday were well prepared and probably didn't sustain any damage. There were some that obviously didn't prepare, and I think there may have been some lost sails in those cases.

New Jersey is in another state of disaster, which seems to be the story of the year. Power is out for millions. We lost power at our house at noon yesterday and it may not be back until next week. Hopefully, we get it back sooner, just for Sue's sanity. She has no power at home or at her office in Parsippany. I have power at my office, at least. Sue drives me bat-shit crazy when she stresses over these inconveniences! Well, first year with the new boat and already a brush with a hurricane / tropical storm. I'm feeling OK today!

Thank you for the write up Scott. Happy you, Sue and the boat were sparred the wrath of the storm.

It is amazing that boat owners fail to prepare for a storm like Isaias and then face the impact. :yikes:

Lost power systems for a sailboat. "some that obviously didn't prepare, and I think there may have been some lost sails in those cases" Wonder if they would treat a power boat in the same way. Probably.

Stay safe and happy with your new Hurricane survived boat. Perhaps keeping the name let the wind gods spare the boat.

Happy to hear that you guys escaped any damages, especially to the new boat!
Appears that your preparations paid off.

Hopefully power will be restored quicker than projected. I have considered installing a whole house generator; however, can’t justify the $10k+ expense!
I shouldn’t print this, cause it’s likely to bite me, but.... I purchased a 6kw generator over 15 years ago for a backup and have never needed it. Didn’t even use it after Katrina since power was restored before I returned from evacuation. Have also added 2 Honda portables. at least I can keep the refrigerator going and a small window AC if necessary. Of course that’s 3 more pieces of equipment that needs to be maintained!

Still very early in storm season, hopefully we can get through another year unscathed.

Ha! You just reminded me that I do have a small portable generator on the new boat! I was thinking about bringing it home last Sunday, but I was too tired to dig it out and my car was filled with too much crap anyways. I'm going back tonight, so it's a good excuse to bring the generator home now. I'm guessing that the Association rules might have something to say about restricting generators. We bought a generator in 2012 in preparation for Sandy when we lived in Lake Hopatcong. I never had a reason to use it again. One of the kids have it now, not sure who, though!

We rode it out on the boat last night. Highest wind observed on the boat was 42 kt. No drama or damage in our river or marina that I know of.

I'll give those boat owners who didn't prepare a bit of a pass. This storm was fast moving and I think caught people by surprise. Other folks just have other situations in their lives. Some just blow it off.

Also glad to hear that you made it OK, Scott..Hope they get your power back on quickly. Power outages are not too unusual for us folks who live on the gulf coast..The bad part is losing the air conditioning! Here in Baton Rouge, I lost power for only an hour during Katrina (Aug '05), but for Gustav, (Sept '08) we were without for a week.. I had a small generator that kept the frige and freezer happy (running 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening) and I cooked outside on the propane pit and side burner. I think I counted almost 20 or so times when I've done the "hurricane drill" since '91 with the Hunter. That involves closing seacocks, removing shore power, removing all canvas, doubling the dock lines and rigging for an additional 5 or so feet of water.. usually about 3-4 hours to get done.
Again, good to hear yall are OK ..

I’m about 30 minutes S of you. I dock at Harbour Cove in Somers Point. I checked my boat yesterday around 11am. I could barely stand on the dock. 3 other sailboats on a different finger where sword fighting with masts. My boat faired well. Lots of canvas carnage around me. Oddly I never lost power. The homes and businesses around the marina lost power.

Hopefully nothing but good days ahead.

Here in Toms River at the Marina a friend and I helped the marina owner secure some of the boats that weren't. I stayed in during Sandy, so It wasn't my first rodeo.
The Marina owner wasn't as lucky, the gusts and wet dock sent him in for a swim. We used a swim ladder to get him out. Luckily no bruises, except maybe his pride.
All boats weathered the storm well, maybe a few scratches.

Cool, how is the inlet coming in there? Sue wants to go on a little trip!

I have one that runs off my 500 gallon [390 liquid rest vapor] in ground Propane tank.
My cost was <$3000.
Mine ran for 26 days straight on my full tank.

I installed so many after Katrina, the company called me to be an Official installer of theirs.
But...
I just now looked and you are right. Big time increase in price for my 75kw unit.

But again....

It you want to discuss how I can make this one work like whole house power, you have my phone number.
Generac Power Systems - 10kW Guardian Series Home Generator - 7171

Mine came with a new breaker panel to connect essential circuits.

I made it down last night to check on the boat and to turn off the fridge as the power was out over a wide area. Within minutes of arriving power was back on.
As @Scott T-Bird said those who prepared by moving into the more protected area of the marina faired very well.
The piling that Scott mentioned was observed bending back and forth and eventually snapped at the water line. Their starboard side pushpit got crunched against the stern piling and their Bimini was shredded. Luckily marina crews were able to pull a line to the next port piling and get the boat pulled back into the center of the slip.
I counted 5 boats that lost the jibs. One had been at the marina Monday night, tied his boat up real well but was so beat from the heat he simply forgot to tie up the jib better. One had been there prepping his boat Monday and takes care of his boat. SH. Another is a real nice old guy who people try to teach but he just doesn't get it. I was amazed how many people put one wrap or less of the sheets on the jib when furling them.

The most heavily damaged boat was an O'day 320 that was well tied in its exposed slip. He had had motor trouble and couldn't move the boat. The wind and waves stretched his lines to the point he went up on his port side finger pier. Marina crew and friends tried but could not get the boat pulled back off the pier. The finger pier collapsed, the toe rail got caught on the piling and lifted the deck off the hull.
He always moves to the protected side of the marina when a storm comes. Just bad luck the motor was OOS when he needed it most.

I would suggest good preparations, for any Storm Season, should start earlier than 3 days.

Three days is the best Storm tracking models accuracy.

However, the entire East Coast had at least 7 days advanced notice for Isaias.

For my East Coast advance notice for the 2020 Hurricane season....

Hurricane Isaias is it!

Prepare now...

It’s not how many wraps: It’s:
1) Tightness. If the wind can’t get under the overlapping wraps of the leech, it won‘t be able to unwrap.
2) Sheeting angle. As the sail furls, the sheeting point needs to come forward to keep the leech from opening up above the clew.
IMHO more wraps isn’t good for the sail long-term - it creates a pressure and chafe point.

Jim, inquiring minds want to know and I don't want to swamp you with phone calls asking you to give out your number.
But: How about a Cliff Notes version of how to make this work as like a whole house power.

I recognize that the short version is not to be used as an "installation manual" but rather a "will this work for my needs?" I still can't justify the $10K since the impact of a loss of power is mostly inconvenience for me. However, my wife doesn't see it that way. I can replace a lot of stuff in the freezer/refrigerator for probably my lifetime for $10K and if things get too bad I have a 2K generator to power the fridge. Yes, I have to fill it up with gas frequently but it does in a pinch. I am not sure I want power coming on in my house after a major event like a hurricane though unless I am at home and if its bad enough for that I probably will have evacuated.

Cliff Notes version [on back up power generator 8KW-10KW]
1) Locate [from your current house 120VAC panel] essential circuits.
Examples: Refrigerator, main bedroom, kitchen outlets and lights, one bathroom, outside security lighting, small microwave.

2) Add up Amp loads, not breakers size, on those circuits. 10KW = 83 Amps continuous duty

3) If possible, one new dedicated circuit for a small window Air conditioner, in main family gathering area, and wall plugs for circulation Fans

4) Install a small new Breaker panel for your generator to power those essential circuits and jumper them to old ones.

5) Generator ON, turn off your Old panel box, all non-essentials breaker off, all needed ones ON in both panels.

Short version and not too hard to add new wire either.
Jim...

PS: You can Amp-manage those breakers too. I suggest Refrigerator run all night, off during meal times.

This is illegal and could land you in jail and/or civil suits if it goes wrong and kills someone. You forgot the transfer switch (or switches). :banghead: To meet codes you've got to make it so the generator is isolated from the main power feed so there's ZERO chance of accidentally back-feeding to the power lines (and injuring/killing a utility company worker). Yes, I get it -- turning off power to the mains or those individual breakers will work, but it depends on the operator to do things right. A mains transfer switch (for a whole-house generator), or (for a contractors generator) a sub-box transfer switch with switches for each circuit to be powered are required to meet code, and to be idiot-proof for the operator.
