What are your opinions on the Yanmar 2GM 13 hp motor for a 1982 Hunter 30? I will be sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, so the tides and currents are not that great. For those who have sailed this set up, how is it? Enough power, or do you wish you had a 2GM20 18 hp? I am sill looking at possibly upgrading the motor, though I have yet not sailed this boat. If the general opinion is that the 13 hp is adequate, I will stay with the motor I have. Thanks. Richard

2gm

The 2gm has max output of 15 hp, 13 hp is continuous rating. Very little difference between engine and 2gm 20

My opinion

It’s under powered, but you probably know that. I have sailed a boat that’s under powered. In strong head winds it would just about make headway. I upgraded to a vetus 16 twin diesel (this was on a Hunter 27) for about $4,600.00 and been extremely happy with it. If the boat comes with this motor and it runs well go for it. If later you can’t live with it then upgrade.

H30 with YSM12

I have a 78 H30 with a YSM12, which we sail on the Chesapeake. It is definitely underpowered, but will approach hull speed on flat days, which is usually when we use it. I sometimes wish for more power, but, not enough to spend the money to upgrade. On a club cruise this past summer, we could hang with, or lead the way when under sail, but the bigger, newer boats with larger motors did a "horizon job" on us when the winds died. I tend to agree with Richard, try it and see what you think first.

Underpowered?

I'll give you underpowered: how about my 1988 33.5 with 2GM20? I'm seriously considering a 3-blade prop.

Three blade prop gave my 2gm15 ..

more Ummph! Guess thats the expression I'm trying for. But I noticed alot more punch going through rough water and backing up was alot better also. Cut sailing performance close to a knot at top speed... 6knots instead of 7knots. It's one approach, but it is a trade off.

underpowered but

I'm the crazy guy on Amelia Island, FL with the only sailboat with twin screws(kindof). When our YSM12 (continous 10hp) was acting real funky last year, I bought 9.8 hp outboard. Sure enough YSM died. Outboard only for 3 months. I had the YSM rebuilt. Now we have both. I seldom use the outboard except when the big guys are trying to leave me when motoring. Actually the outboard pushes the boat faster than YSM but not near as convienent. If your current engine is working, it is worth considering, about 1/3 the money of any upgrade.

290-2gm20--- IS GOOD

My 2001 290 hunter has the 2GM20F and it has plenty of power as long as I keep the prop clean other wise I do loose hull speed 6.5 kts. I would think your 30 ft boat with 13 hp engine has to be under powered and in strong currents or ruff weather you could use more power,I would go for the engine up grade and not the three blade prop,I would not want to give up sailing speed. nick

vetus m310

I changed out my yse12 for a Vetus m310 (22hp) and am very happy with it. I was always under powered with the 12hp.

Thanks for your responses

Thanks, all. I am planning to buy the 2gm20. I spoke with Tom Watts at Mack Boring. He said that the newer motor should be swopable without much problem. One of my concerns is having enough power in a blow. I have been underpowered before in that situation and do not like it. The next decision will be which prop to use. I have both two and three blade. I might try each for a few months. If all goes well, I will have a Yanmar 2GM13hp in good condition for sale.

2gm20F

My 1980 Hunter 30 is powered by a 2GM20F with a 3 blade 13x13 prop. Hull speed is fairly easy at 3200 rpm and it will cruise at 5.7 knots @ 2800 rpm consuming 1/2 gal of diesel an hour. I have motored into 15t knot head winds easily. Fits easily into the boat too. After 14 years/1000 hours, it is still running strong. Have fun.
