Is this the way you do it?

Relaxing, that is.

I've spent most of the day sailing around Fishers Island Sound with no goal or objective other than to enjoy the caressing, intoxicating air that only the last warm days of a New England fall can produce.

There were times this morning when the engine was off and the knot log read under three knots. That's almost as unusual on Strider as having the engine off and the speed reading over 12 knots.

I did run the engine long enough to nip in and see one of my research vessels. The wind then came up for a wonderful reach across to Fisher's Island.

Everyone is out for a last weekend of boating and SeaTow and TowboatUS can't keep up. There's been more drama on the VHF then you can usually find on cable.

I heard a cell phone ring to windward and looked around to see the boat that had been sailing next to me pointed right at my beam with the skipper punching the keypad. I jumped up but he remembered where he was and what he was doing before I had to yell. It's happening on the water now.

So inside or outside on your way to Cape May?
If you stop near Manhattan or City Island I could meet you.
Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts.

Inside. I have to make a stop in New Haven and possibly a stop in Stamford so I will have used up a lot of my visiting time with the hounds of winter at my heels.

Have you done the Hell Gate to Atlantic Highlands run? Any advice appreciated. Any interest in coming along? A second hand is always good in busy waters like that.

If anyone else is interested, even all the way to Cape May, let me know.

Also, can anyone recommend a good marina in New Haven where I can leave the boat for a day to go see my new grandnephew?

Can't help you with New Haven, but Hell Gate and the East River are much like Wood Hole, best to hit Hells Gate as close to slack water as you can glean from Eldridge, and ride the East River current down to the harbor, I've done the reverse twice come up the East River to hit Hell Gate at approximate slack water. The first time in a 24 ft sloop with a 5 hp Seagull as power, we hit an hour early (didn't get the boost of the tide right) and it was ok.

I once got towed, by TowBoat US up the East River, AGAINST the tide, but that's a different story. :)

Even though I have known the Guilford area all my life, I am not familiar with the marinas in New Haven. I have however have stayed at Milford, and if you can travel a few miles more to the West, the Town docks in Milford are nice facilities, and nice people.
As far as Hell Gate and the East River, I have done it many times. The last time being a full Moon trip this last July with my wife and 12 yo daughter and her friend. We pulled into Newport Marina in Jersey City around 12:30am. It got rave reviews not only from my wife, but the 12 year olds. It was my second time doing that. If you plan on going under the Throgs Neck Bridge about 1.5 to 2 hours after high water at the Battery, you will ride the current right down to the Verazano. Day or night, it really is a great ride. I really enjoy the ride, and would love to go, but since I am an apple grower, it's the wrong time of the year. The very end of October though, and I might be able to sneak away for a day.

Oops, I mis spoke. I should know better than to rely on memory with an aging brain. Go under the Throgs Neck about a half hour after high water at the battery. Have a great trip.
