Is this overkill?

I have a Sitex T 150 radar that i purchased for a power boat that I have now sold, am I crazy for wanting to put this thing on my C-27, if I'm not crazy, does anyone have any suggestions where I should put both the Dome and the screen for that matter? I do most of my sailing in Long Island Sound and slighly offshore (<30 milea)

Radar is a good thing

It really depends on where your using it and what's around you. I believe you stated 30 miles or less. Well if you have a 16 or 24 mile radar and your out 30 miles it isn't going to matter is it. Lond Island Sound usually has alot of traffic..ie. barges and what not. Ever been by a barge in the fog..you never hear it till it right in front of you. Yes they have radar also, but don't you want to be the one that sees them and does the evasive manouver?I don't think it's overkill at all. The question is where are you going to put it. I would put it on a post on the transom or on a pole unit that attaches to the backstay.West Marine has a neat arm bracket that attaches the LCD screen to the companionway so when you want to see the screen from the helm you swing out the arm bracket. To put it away you swing it back inside.It's will be used alot more on your boat than in your cellar. As you know selling used radar is kind of tough, you don't get nearly the amount you paid for it.I plan to do a couple of trips down Long Island Sound next summer, I'll be lookig for you beefed up C-27!Good luck,Charlie

Extra safety is NEVER overkill

I've you've already got the equipment, why not use it? It will only add a margin of safety to your sailing. And safety on the water can never be too great. You sail on the ocean sometimes, right? New England gets socked in with fog sometimes, right? I'd love to have radar in those conditions...As for mounting: The array should be mounted on a samll pole or mast at your stearn, above head level. The display, if water proof could be mounted on the pedistal for best viewing or if not waterproof, how about above the chart table?
