Had some snow damage when the weight oh the snow on the shrink wrap rolled the boom and bent the tang on the ridged vang 40 degrees. After straightening and reinstalling I felt the boom slide back. Noticed what seems to be a wide gap on the swivel at the gooseneck . Is this normal and is there something I can tighten?

The cotter pin in the boom end cap likely broke. This is a PISS POOR design. Hopefully it has been changed on later boats but does not look like it... This one sheared completely off in 20-25 knots leaving the boom flying around..... A very poor design..

Thank you for the comments and photos. The boom only moves so far back and stops so I am pretty sure the pin has not totally left the fitting, but that said I will have it apart this coming weekend. Looks like I can limit the play with a stack of washers or spacer. Anyone though of an actual dowel pin driven into place vs. a cotter pin?

Thanks again - lucky my gap does not look all that more excessive than what Paul J is showing..

This is a PISS POOR design
Seems to put too much reliance on the strength of a cotter pin in a manner cotter pins are not intended to be stressed.

IIRC, the links I provided lead to providing a bolt, could be from Maine Sail or one of our C34 guys.
This was supposed to be a roll pin.:naughty:
Catalina updated this inadequacy provided by their spar manufacturer maybe 8 yrs ago. Check with Warren.
The roll pin goes into the end casting and is captured when that casting is reinstalled.
There should be little movement and no rotation

You could use a roll pin........I think ..........this is not a good place to use a roll pin.

Roll pins are good for locating and aligning parts.

I found this in my 310 Catalina book.

I do not know Gary and did not get his permission to use his notes.......but since the article was in

my book

I posted it......this could be a fake document.

Thanks Gary.

If it is "Fake" darn good fake. I plan to arm myself with the proper pin and take a look at making the correction this Friday before I even launch the boat, or bend on the sail.

Thank you

Hi Paul,

Yes, I can assure you that the document you found is the real deal! And, yes, it is OK to post it here so that others can benefit from this experience (that's why I did it). It is also posted on the C310 Owners' site (http://www.catalina310.org/Maintenance/Maintenance/C310 Boom Mount Pkg.pdf).
When this came up 10 years ago (seems like yesterday) there was all kinds of discussion about how to fix and what size cotter pin to use, how many washers, etc. The Catalina fix as described has worked well and without issue. Glad you found it.
