How did he see where he was headed?

You would think with that many sails showing,
he would've taken the time to CLEAN them........

I also think these many sails choke the HP & LP sides of the sails
for smooth wind flow from bow aft.

The winds were obviously fairly light that day. Yikes! Looks hard to single hand.

No problem with single handed sailing as the early boats had up to 15 crew members (on an 18 footer)
They were basically ballast. The early boats have evolved into the F 1 class of sailing.
Or so the promotions say. The originals are still raced.

The blue boat above reminds me of a Phil Bolger design. A couple of sheets of plywood and some, maybe even, Dacron. Who's to judge?

How much rail meat was was required to keep all that so flat? (All of them hidden behind that big fore-sail.)

According to this site, it was a 22 footer, not 18

The 22 footer Vigilant,* built in 1896 by Billy Golding in Balmain for a "syndicate of 20 young fellows". On a very light day she is carrying a squares'l with raffee above set from the jackyard tops'l, a ringtail set from the peak of the gaff and the end of the boom extending the sail area of the main out from the leech, and a very large balloon jib set from the end of the bumpkin (the spar that others might call a bowsprit). For the full story of these sails and why we call it a bumpkin and not a bowsprit, you'll have to read the Open Boat book.
The 18 footer you're referring to is actually shown in the photo above on that site.
