Is This Enough Bearing to Carry a Boat

Needing to get the trailer out from under my boat. Will this be enough bearing to not damage the boat? After the trailer is out should I also block under the keel? Need to at least change the pendent line. Will do similar at the bow. Thanks in advance Greg

It looks very dangerous to me. If you're working under one part of the boat, I'd try to leave the trailer under some of the boat in case all that wood mess collapses.

Just my $.02, but when I raised my boat off the trailer it was with support under the keel and boat jacks at the transom and just forward of the keel for balance. I did not like the idea of all that weight borne by the hull and I definitely did not like the weight supported even a hair away from vertical.

I looks like he does have his trailer still under the boat. When I lifted my C27, I did it with a hydrolic jack under the keel supports. The forces necessary to lifted it with just the keel was tremendous and made me nervous, especially after reading about the famous keel smiles on Catalinas.

Greg,

I'm in the middle of this right now. If your trying to get it off the trailer, there are is a relatively new post that shows how a fellow built a gallows over the boat and hung the bow with a 3" ratchet strap until he got the trailer out. Then he lowered it onto a strong horse like the one you've shown. The wood should be screwed together to keep it from shifting when the boat rocks in high winds. Ask me how I know.

I left mine on the trailer for painting. I'm assuming that's were you're headed. This is how I went about it.

1) Jacked the bow from the trailer tongue until the hull was 1 1/2+ inches off of the forward supports and inserted 2X6X6.
2) Moved the jack under the aft end the keel and got the hull off of the rear support and inserted a wood block.
3) Moved the jack back under the bow and added a little pressure
4) Removed the roller assemblies on the sides and below.

You probably have bunks. When you pull the jack from under the keel, I would definitely block it up.

I made these.Seems a lot safer.Have had the boat up 3 times .Never a problem.Use 6 in Green pipe for Boom, gin pole storage in winter.saves dings, holes in cushions.Jack up 6x6 with floor jacks. attach outer tripods.Have been all over boat. Doesn,t move.Plan on putting it up next week,IF it ever stops raining.Slip it May 7,!!!

I'd like to see more of a cross tie at the top in case the blocks try to slide sideways. There also isn't much to keep this from folding over sideways. I wouldn't want to work near or under this without something with "X" bracing. I would build a cradle just aft of this as close as I could fit it and let the boat down on it. This looks strong but is a bit of a house of cards.

I like to see wood laying flat with full contact between pieces. Some of those boards could slip out like a wet bar of soap.

As an answer to your question; yes, it is a large enough bearing area to not damage the boat ..unless it falls. The time needed to recover from an accident is much greater than the time needed to properly shore up a heavy load.
